Bayanihan isn't something we leave behind when we cross the ocean; it just trades its traditional wooden poles for the rhythm of our daily lives here in the U.S. Whether it’s organizing balikbayan box fundraisers to support communities both back home in the Philippines and right here locally, rallying together to cheer on our kababayan on the global stage—from rooting for Miss Universe to tracking every tennis match Alex Eala plays, because it's a way of saying, "You are not out there alone; millions of us are standing right behind you holding you up"—or opening our doors to help new families settle into our neighborhoods, that spirit of communal unity is alive and well. From our healthcare workers supporting each other through tough shifts to family and friends dropping everything to help get a new business off the ground, bayanihan is how we turn a sprawling, fast-paced American landscape into a connected community—proving that no matter where we plant our roots, we still lift each other up. 🇵🇭

🤝 Bayanihan is one of the most beautiful values in Filipino culture, the spirit of neighbors coming together to help one another. It is captured in the old image of a whole community lifting a bahay kubo on their shoulders to move it to a new place. More than a custom, it is a way of seeing that no one is meant to carry life alone.

🇵🇭EL NIDO, PHILIPPINES 🏝️

Most people know El Nido for its jaw-dropping beaches and dramatic cliffs, but this little slice of paradise has a history that goes back way further than most travelers realize. Long before it became a bucket-list tropical getaway, its story was shaped by ancient cave dwellers, global traders, and Spanish influence:

Ancient Roots: Archaeologists digging in the nearby Dewil Valley (specifically at Ille Cave) found evidence that humans have called this part of Palawan home for anywhere between 14,000 and 22,000 years, long before any colonial contact. The indigenous Tagbanua and Cuyonon tribes originally populated these coastlines and forests.

Early Global Trade: Believe it or not, international trade here started centuries before Spanish ships ever arrived. Chinese merchants were sailing up to northern Palawan all the way back during the Song Dynasty (960–1279 AD) specifically to trade for the area's prized edible swiftlet nests.

The "Bacuit" Days: During the Spanish colonial era, the area started out as a small Tagbanua settlement called Talindak before eventually being renamed Bacuit.

How It Got Its Name: For generations, the town kept the name Bacuit until June 1954, when an official act changed it to El Nido. The name comes from Spanish word for "the nest" (nido), a direct nod to the lucrative, highly sought-after swiftlet nests harvested from the dark crevices of those massive limestone walls.
