💐 Bought yourself flowers? Look at you, being the main character! 🌷😎 You deserve that beautiful bouquet. Now let's make sure those blooms last longer.

Fresh flowers have a way of making a room feel brighter, bringing a little joy to an ordinary day, and reminding us that sometimes it's worth treating ourselves just because.

But before you put your bouquet in a vase and call it a day, Cyrus, our florist at La Montañita Food Co-op in Santa Fe, has a simple tip to help keep your flowers looking fresh and fabulous! 🌸

✂️ The trick: Give your stems a fresh 45-degree cut when you get home.

Why cut at an angle? A slanted cut creates a larger exposed surface than a straight cut and helps prevent the stem from sitting flat against the bottom of the vase, where water needs to reach it.

Flowers need water to stay hydrated, so giving them a fresh trim is a great first step toward helping your bouquet last.

🌿 Want to keep those flowers looking their best? Here are a few more easy tips:

💧 Start with a clean vase. A clean container and fresh water help keep your flowers in a better environment.
✂️ Trim before arranging. Use clean, sharp scissors or floral shears to make a fresh cut on the stems.
🍃 Keep leaves out of the water. Remove any foliage that would sit below the waterline to help keep the water cleaner.
🌷 Refresh the water regularly. Change the water every couple of days, or sooner if it looks cloudy, and give the vase a quick clean.
🌤️ Choose the right spot. Keep your bouquet away from direct sunlight, heaters, and other sources of heat.
Ripening fruit can also release ethylene gas, which may cause some flowers to age more quickly.

These small steps can help you get more enjoyment out of your flowers and keep your space feeling fresh and cheerful.

And remember, different flowers have different needs, so a little extra attention to your particular bouquet can go a long way! 💐✨

Whether you're shopping for a special occasion or simply buying yourself a little happiness, you don't need an excuse to bring home something beautiful. 😉

🌼 Now we want to hear from you!

This month, La Montañita Food Co-op’s Round Up For Change program is proud to support Center of Southwest Culture, Inc. — an organization working to strengthen communities through culture, food, agriculture, health, and economic opportunity.

What does a strong local food system look like? It’s about so much more than what’s on our plates! A healthy, resilient food system connects many parts of our lives and communities, including:

🥕 Health and well-being: Helping improve access to nutritious food and supporting healthier communities.

🌾 Food and cultural traditions: Valuing the knowledge, practices, and foodways that connect people to their heritage and the land.

💚 Local economic opportunity: Supporting local producers, businesses, and the people who help our regional food

🤝 Stronger communities: Creating opportunities for people to connect, share knowledge, and work together toward a healthier future.

These connections are at the heart of building a thriving Southwest. At La Montañita, we believe that supporting local producers, strengthening community relationships, and keeping our food system rooted in our region are important ways to help our Southwestern culture thrive.

That’s why we invite you to participate in Round Up For Change! Throughout October, you can round up your purchase at the register to support Center of Southwest Culture, Inc. It’s a simple way to turn a small everyday action into an opportunity to support meaningful community work.

Every little bit adds up when we come together. Thank you for shopping at your community-owned Co-op, supporting our Round Up partners, and helping build a stronger, healthier Southwest. ❤️

Whether you’re brightening up your kitchen, treating yourself to a little midweek pick-me-up, or bringing a pop of color to your home, fresh flowers deserve a little extra TLC! 🌸✨

💚 Why does the Board of Directors matter? Because your Co-op belongs to its members!

La Montañita isn’t just a grocery store. We’re a member-owned cooperative, built around the idea that people can work together to create something meaningful for their community.

Our Board of Directors helps guide the Co-op’s long-term direction and provides strategic leadership to support our mission, values, and organizational health. It’s about looking at the bigger picture and helping La Montañita navigate challenges, recognize opportunities, and plan for the future.

Why should that matter to you as a member-owner?

Because the decisions and direction of the Co-op affect the community we serve, the local food system we support, and the future of this member-owned organization.

And you have a voice in who helps provide that leadership!

As we celebrate 50 years of La Montañita, we’re also thinking about the next 50 years. How do we continue supporting local farmers and producers? How do we remain a valuable resource for our communities? How do we keep our cooperative strong for generations to come?

Our Board helps guide that journey, and our members help choose who serves.

🗳️ The 2026 Board of Directors election runs November 1–14.

Take some time to learn about the six candidates, explore their perspectives, and read the official Voter Guide at:

www.lamontanita.coop/elections

Then make your voice heard!
Because a strong Co-op starts with an engaged community. 🌱

🎃🏆 We have a winner!

Give it up for Roark who correctly guessed this week’s mystery produce: our LOCAL mini WHITE and ORANGE PUMPKINS 🎃 🎉🍂

These little pumpkins may be perfect for your fall porch display, but they can be more than just a pretty decoration! Depending on the variety, pumpkins can be roasted, stuffed, blended into soups, or even used in sweet treats. They’re also packed with nutrients, including fiber, beta-carotene (which your body converts into vitamin A), and other vitamins and minerals.

🍽️ Looking for a way to put those pumpkins to work in the kitchen? Try this cozy fall recipe!

Mini Stuffed Pumpkins with Wild Rice & Veggies

🧡 What you'll need:

* 2–4 small, edible pumpkins
* 1 cup cooked wild rice
* 1 small onion, diced
* 1 cup mushrooms, chopped
* 1 cup spinach
* 2 cloves garlic, minced
* Olive oil
* Salt and pepper, to taste
* Your favorite shredded cheese (optional, but highly encouraged!)

👩‍🍳 How to make them:

1. Preheat your oven to 375°F.
2. Carefully slice off the tops of the pumpkins and scoop out the seeds and stringy bits.
3. Brush the insides with olive oil and season with salt and pepper.
4. Sauté the onion, mushrooms, and garlic in a little olive oil until tender. Stir in the spinach and cooked wild rice.
5. Spoon the filling into the hollowed-out pumpkins and top with cheese, if using.
6. Place the pumpkins in a baking dish, add a little water to the bottom, and bake for about 30–45 minutes, or until the pumpkin flesh is tender. Cooking time will depend on the size and variety, so keep an eye on them!

The result? An adorable, seasonal dish that looks fancy enough for a holiday table but is cozy enough for a weeknight dinner. 🍁

•One important tip: Not every decorative pumpkin is suitable for eating. Before cooking, make sure you know the variety and that it’s intended for culinary use. And if you scoop out those seeds, save them for roasting!

Thanks for playing ❤️ We love seeing our community get curious about the food that’s all around us!

Didn't win this week? No worries! Keep an eye out for our next mystery food, drop your best guess in the comments, and you could be our next winner. 🥳

🧀 Three cheeses walk into your shopping basket… and suddenly your snack game has a passport. 🌎😏

Maddie from our La Montañita Food Co-op Avanyu Plaza Cheese Department is sharing a few of her favorites, and trust us, this lineup deserves a spot on your next cheese board!

🐑 Sheep & Goats Feta from Meredith Dairy, Australia
Creamy, tangy, and packed with flavor! Maddie’s pro tip? Don’t toss that leftover oil when the cheese is gone. Use it to make a delicious salad dressing or vinaigrette. That’s what we call getting your money’s worth. 😉 Meredith Dairy

🇫🇷 Délice de Bourgogne Triple Cream Brie, France
Rich, buttery, and ridiculously creamy. This one is ready for your favorite crackers, a slice of crusty bread, some local jams, or a date with a spoon. We won’t judge.

🍎 Withersbrook Blue from Jasper Hill Farm, Vermont
A bold, flavorful blue cheese washed in ice c***r, bringing a little fruity complexity to the party. Perfect for anyone who likes their cheese with a little extra character! Jasper Hill Farm

This week’s Staff Pick comes from Leann at our Avanyu Plaza Co-op, and she has a pretty convincing argument for making pizza night a whole lot easier.

Leann’s pick? Rao’s Brick Oven Pizza! 🍕

💬 Leann says:

“I love Rao’s because of the yummy sauce and the great crust. It’s easy to take home and bake.”

And honestly, we love a dinner plan that doesn't require a complicated dinner plan. 😂

Sometimes you want a delicious pizza without making the dough, chopping a million toppings, or waiting for delivery. That’s where Rao’s comes in. Just take one home, pop it in the oven, and before you know it, you’ve got a crispy, cheesy pizza ready for the table.

🍕 Great crust? Leann-approved.
🍅 Yummy sauce? Leann-approved.
🔥 Easy to take home and bake? Very much approved.

Pair it with a simple salad, your favorite veggies, or just grab a few slices and call it dinner. We won’t judge. 😉

So the next time you're at Avanyu Plaza, check out Rao’s Brick Oven Pizza and see why it’s one of Leann’s Staff Picks.

Because sometimes the best dinner plan is the one that gets you to “pizza is ready!” the fastest. 🍕💚
