New Season, New Vibes

Greetings to you on this fine day; This is Caleb tuning in, the third born. I'm excited to write this month's newsletter! This month, and this season, is one of such abundance. Autumnal fruit like pears and apples, new shapes, glaze patterns, events and more! I’m excited as we journey through the story of growth, music, mugshots, and a new kiln project.

September

Over the past months our family has been working to be as efficient and productive as possible. Elisha has started to design, build and put into place the structure needed to host our new kiln. As the video below shows, the new kiln was transported hundreds of miles all the way from New Mexico.

As we get closer to being able to fire and use the new kiln we are excited to present a new glaze pattern.

This new pattern, came about as David saw the beauty of layering one of our new glazes. A splash, a clash of colors, purposely dashing upon the vessel; in a way that brings the freedom of the dragonfly but also the season it’s made in.

Mug Shot of the Month

This month’s mugshot comes from Brittney Trotter, a great friend and teacher from my high-school! Many days I have spent talking and learning so much in her US Government class, it’s a blessing to have such highly esteemed mentors.

I have such great memories with all of you from 21CCCS! I enjoyed having you all in class and having fun conversations about random things and getting updates on your lives. You are all so talented and doing amazing things as you move on from high school. I got this mug on my first visit to see the Young family. I call it my sunshine mug! The mug brings a smile to my face each time l use it and I always think about the wonderful students you were. I can't wait for my annual visit next summer Also, my cat wanted to be in the photo. Caleb this is not the one who got into the pasta sauce and turned his paw red or stole pizza.

If you would like to be featured in our newsletter, reply to this email with a picture of you, your favorite mug, and a memory you have with us!

Upcoming Events!
-Pottery On The Hill (https://www.hillcenterdc.org/partner/pottery-on-the-hill/) November 14-15
-Potter & The Bard November 22nd

Stay tuned for more details!

This month’s song is a cover of a folk band, and i’m excited to share with you what my younger brother is playing but also his thoughts behind the lyrics and tune.

“Cold is The Night.” By the Oh Hellos.
(Kagen speaking) I really like this song because it talks about some tough topics, like loss, want for a partner, and surrender. All things I’ve experienced, but haven’t always known how to put into words.
One of the gifts music gives us is making us feel seen and known. I discovered this song during a rough chapter, shortly after losing a dear pet. I remember hearing the set of lyrics in the song, “Cold is the Night without you here, just your absence ringing in my ear.” These lyrics touched such a deep part of me, putting into words emotion i didn't know how to verbalize.
This song helped remind me that I have a choice in which road this loss, and sadness leads me down, one in which I can walk alone, Or one in which i can walk through leaning on God and allowing him to take this heavy burden away, helping me grow and learn from it in ways He sees best. Sorrow is not a path meant to be gone through alone.

“Come to me all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light” (Mathew 11: 28-30)

October is such a good time for preparation, settling and striving to connect! As you go forward in this time remember to take time to see the season, to smell its winds, and soak in the sun rays, we are so thankful that we can be a part of your journey.

Savor September

This is Kagen Young (the youngest son) bringing you the September newsletter. We have been enjoying the cooler weather recently, trying to get things done while it's here. School is back in session, but summer is not over. We still have a wide variety of fruits and veggies, including juicy peaches, wonderful plums, the first of our apples, local sweet corn, and much more. There have been many exciting ventures taking place in and around The Lion Potter.

Cate and Elisha, with the help of our neighbor, have built a rock retaining wall all from our buried rocks in the yard. This hard work has unlocked more space for us to garden. We plan on seeding flowers and carrots with the new land we get to use.

Last Saturday, we were welcomed to the Adams County Farmers Market, for a pop-up. We were able to share our fresh produce, pots, and Cate’s vibrant bouquets there. I had a chance to visit the market that day, and was delighted to see familiar faces and meet new people!

This past month, we had the privilege of a new friend, Helen, working with us! You may have seen her around the property. She is a budding artist with great skill in painting and drawing. Helen has been learning the craft, helping us with our daily tasks, and shadowing the potters. She has been a great help and friend, contributing to the cultivation of a vibrant and positive environment. We hope we have had as much of an impact and inspiration on her as she has had on us in the past month.

Through all the new projects and endeavors we are trying to make sure we take time to rest whether that be a nap or pausing throughout the week for a spot of tea. Nothing quite rejuvenates you like a cup of tea with loved ones around. There's no right way to have a tea time, but personally, I enjoy having two kinds of tea. This way you can try a variety. I also enjoy something small to nibble on, like crackers, or granola!

New Glaze Combination

Out of our most recent kiln firing came a beautiful glaze combination we are very excited to show you. We put our Leach white glaze atop our new tomato glaze, displaying a high-contrast yet warm pot. This is one of the mugs with the glaze design.

It has been different for me this September because I graduated and don’t have any school this year, but I have been using that time to work on some personal projects. Keeping busy with drawing, baking, and playing guitar! As you read on please enjoy pictures of my craft, and a video of me playing one of my favorite songs, called “If We Were Vampires” by Jason Isabel and the 400 Unit.

Often when autumn arrives, I begin to wait till next spring to start living again. Listening to this song reminded me that I’m living with limited time, a life span with only so many falls. There is an urgency for us to enjoy each season despite the weather we are going through. Our short life is a gift, a gift only harnessed when appreciated. We only have so much time so let's treasure the lows and the highs, the warm and the cold.

New Mug Highlight

We bring you two of our new mugs, the Periwinkle Dragonfly Mug. A rounded mug with a beautiful periwinkle glaze, stamped with our dragonfly design. As well as our Jungle Summer Mug, a fl**ge body with a rich winter green glaze, accented with stripes displaying the raw ceramic walls. We are excited to add these two mugs to our summer designs and share it with you.

Mug-shot of the Month

For the Mug shot of the month, we are featuring Anne Coleman, her Make-A-Wish mug, and some memories she has had with us.

Every time I’m in Gettysburg I stop by The Lion Potter for a new mug or some beautiful produce. Each time I come to Gettysburg with someone else I bring them to the Lion Potter to choose a mug. I’ve lost count of how many over the years, but the one I always wanted was the Make a Wish mug. Sadly they would sell out so quickly I could never get one. When I brought one of my daughters with her husband and my granddaughter to find mugs for them, my daughter knew I wanted that mug and somehow she found the last one! I wasn’t going to get another mug for myself that day, but there it was and I happily brought it home. I use this every day and will never tire of it!

If you would like to be featured in our newsletter, reply to this email with a picture of you, your favorite mug, and a memory you have with us.

With August over and September starting, we are sad to see it go, but excited for what this month holds for us. I'm really looking forward to seeing the leaves turn gold, being able to put on my sweater vests and light coats, and most of all, treasuring each day of it. Let's make this a great September! We hope to be a part of yours.

~An August Reflection~

My father (David) often asks our customers and friends passing through, “but have you had a real plum?”
He would say, about our peaches, cherries apricots etc.

It was never about forcing anyone into trying or tasting the fruit, but about placing in their hand a juicy peach, not from the can but from the tree.
These kinds of conversations are my favorite to have, sharing the bounty and freshness of fruits and vegetables.

So while our produce is ripe and sweet during this season, so is the knowledge of what’s on your table, or in your hands; And we couldn’t more excited to share it with you!

Welcome to a Lion Potter August!

Hello from the Lion Potter,

I am so excited to bring you the August edition of the newsletter. This is Cate, at the Lion Potter you might have encountered me by Elisha’s side (number 2 son), in the garden, or working with the produce at the stand. I also run a market farm in Florida.

We have so many exciting happenings on the property right now. We have new newsletter segments this month! Read on for Kagen's Song of the Month, learn how to be featured with your favorite mug, and read about our fruit salad recipe.

Kagen's Pick - Close to You by Carpenters (Cover)

There are a myriad of ways to experience the Lion Potter. Through Kagen's songs, through Elisha's carpentry, Irvin's writings, Calebs art and style. It is so fun and energizing to be part of the crew here, and we speak often of how grateful we are to serve our customer base and bring you the freshest and best of what is available in Adams County. Right now and through much of August we still have a summers abundance of plums, peaches and other produce, so make sure you stop by to see what’s in season!

In addition to produce, we continue to have a steady stream of new pots from the kiln shed. On our website you can find this new ‘Tomato’ glaze stamped with the dragonfly design. A long time ago, a woman named Ann Willis curated a box of 30 years worth of glaze recipes. This treasure trove of ceramic experimentation sat on David’s shelf for a while, until Emily (David’s newest apprentice) came along. She has been working tirelessly to test the different recipes from the box, and it is from these that she found the “Tomato” glaze. We are excited to share it with you now!

Mug-Shot of the Month

We often hear from our customers that their Lion Potter mug becomes their favorite mug to drink from, almost sacred in its familiarity and ability to bring comfort. We are hoping to feature YOU and your favorite comfort-bringing, Lion Potter mug.

To kick off the series, we are featuring Lauren, Justin and their daughter Madelyn from Texas. This sweet family purchased their first Lion Potter mug in July. For September’s newsletter please reply to this email with a picture of you with your favorite mug and maybe a memory from your visit at the Lion Potter!

Fruit Salad Recipe

A typical day at the Lion Potter household begins with a bounteous breakfast spread. Every day we try to eat all three meals together. Part of that breakfast spread involves fruit salad. Not only is it practical for a fruit stand family to munch on the bounty they are selling, it is also a great way to sample the fruits we are recommending to you. There are no hard and fast rules for the fruit salad, but you can find our suggestions below. Through the end of the summer you can stock your fruit salad pantry from our stand and find your favorite variety of fruit butter to mix into your breakfast creation.

- 4-6 Cups sliced fruit, we use whatever is in season to include peaches, nectarines, blueberries, blackberries and apricots and plums. Apples add a fantastic crunch when they’re in season and we also like to include bananas.

- ¼ Cup of pumpkin seeds, walnuts or preferred crunch
- Apple butter to taste, about ¼ cup
- Other possible additions: lemon juice, dried dates, spices, grated fresh ginger.

Serve over yogurt, oatmeal or enjoy by itself. We would love to hear what you think of it!

Life has been full to the brim lately. Elisha has begun some more projects around the house and shop, Caleb and Kagen have kept busy with their commitments to church and friends, Irvin is working on finishing his first book and David and Junko have enjoyed watching their family blossom and business bloom.

Thank you for following along with the unfolding story here and the many voices that make up the Lion Potter. We are so glad you stopped in!
