Savor September
This is Kagen Young (the youngest son) bringing you the September newsletter. We have been enjoying the cooler weather recently, trying to get things done while it's here. School is back in session, but summer is not over. We still have a wide variety of fruits and veggies, including juicy peaches, wonderful plums, the first of our apples, local sweet corn, and much more. There have been many exciting ventures taking place in and around The Lion Potter.
Cate and Elisha, with the help of our neighbor, have built a rock retaining wall all from our buried rocks in the yard. This hard work has unlocked more space for us to garden. We plan on seeding flowers and carrots with the new land we get to use.
Last Saturday, we were welcomed to the Adams County Farmers Market, for a pop-up. We were able to share our fresh produce, pots, and Cate’s vibrant bouquets there. I had a chance to visit the market that day, and was delighted to see familiar faces and meet new people!
This past month, we had the privilege of a new friend, Helen, working with us! You may have seen her around the property. She is a budding artist with great skill in painting and drawing. Helen has been learning the craft, helping us with our daily tasks, and shadowing the potters. She has been a great help and friend, contributing to the cultivation of a vibrant and positive environment. We hope we have had as much of an impact and inspiration on her as she has had on us in the past month.
Through all the new projects and endeavors we are trying to make sure we take time to rest whether that be a nap or pausing throughout the week for a spot of tea. Nothing quite rejuvenates you like a cup of tea with loved ones around. There's no right way to have a tea time, but personally, I enjoy having two kinds of tea. This way you can try a variety. I also enjoy something small to nibble on, like crackers, or granola!
New Glaze Combination
Out of our most recent kiln firing came a beautiful glaze combination we are very excited to show you. We put our Leach white glaze atop our new tomato glaze, displaying a high-contrast yet warm pot. This is one of the mugs with the glaze design.
It has been different for me this September because I graduated and don’t have any school this year, but I have been using that time to work on some personal projects. Keeping busy with drawing, baking, and playing guitar! As you read on please enjoy pictures of my craft, and a video of me playing one of my favorite songs, called “If We Were Vampires” by Jason Isabel and the 400 Unit.
Often when autumn arrives, I begin to wait till next spring to start living again. Listening to this song reminded me that I’m living with limited time, a life span with only so many falls. There is an urgency for us to enjoy each season despite the weather we are going through. Our short life is a gift, a gift only harnessed when appreciated. We only have so much time so let's treasure the lows and the highs, the warm and the cold.
New Mug Highlight
We bring you two of our new mugs, the Periwinkle Dragonfly Mug. A rounded mug with a beautiful periwinkle glaze, stamped with our dragonfly design. As well as our Jungle Summer Mug, a fl**ge body with a rich winter green glaze, accented with stripes displaying the raw ceramic walls. We are excited to add these two mugs to our summer designs and share it with you.
Mug-shot of the Month
For the Mug shot of the month, we are featuring Anne Coleman, her Make-A-Wish mug, and some memories she has had with us.
Every time I’m in Gettysburg I stop by The Lion Potter for a new mug or some beautiful produce. Each time I come to Gettysburg with someone else I bring them to the Lion Potter to choose a mug. I’ve lost count of how many over the years, but the one I always wanted was the Make a Wish mug. Sadly they would sell out so quickly I could never get one. When I brought one of my daughters with her husband and my granddaughter to find mugs for them, my daughter knew I wanted that mug and somehow she found the last one! I wasn’t going to get another mug for myself that day, but there it was and I happily brought it home. I use this every day and will never tire of it!
If you would like to be featured in our newsletter, reply to this email with a picture of you, your favorite mug, and a memory you have with us.
With August over and September starting, we are sad to see it go, but excited for what this month holds for us. I'm really looking forward to seeing the leaves turn gold, being able to put on my sweater vests and light coats, and most of all, treasuring each day of it. Let's make this a great September! We hope to be a part of yours.
