~TEACHABLE TUESDAY~
The cooler air and shorter daylight hours signal the bison that fall has arrived. In most of the country, this means the breeding season is either over or winding down.

Here we see two mature bison bulls that have left the cow herd. This is very typical behavior for the bulls once breeding season is done. They will head out alone or in bachelor groups to begin the recovery process, which will include resting, grazing, and building up their reserves before the cold winter months arrive.

The bulls typically won't rejoin the cow herd until the summer months when the rut, or breeding season, begins again. In small herds, the bulls may stay with the cows year-round, but in larger herds with ample room to roam, the bulls usually separate themselves from the cows and calves.

It is also interesting to note that while many of the bulls are now grouped together, just a short time ago, they were mortal enemies fighting for the attention of the cows.

Come see us tomorrow at the Forest Farmer's Market from 8-12. We have all you need for your Labor Day cookout!
