The Victory Lap Continues
Bates Family Foods is running out of inventory quickly, on its record setting run this year. Noël and I love the fact that were finishing out with our best farmer’s market season ever. It is quite a gift from the universe, but not unacknowledged by us. So many hugs, and so many smiling faces full of sweetly bitter partings for us and y’all (with extra twang!) The out pour of love, and knowing we change so many lives, just a little. One or two people can make a difference, be the change you want to see happen. We follow our dream with BFF and Rainy Glen. We crushed it last week at market, even though the weather was sketchy at best.
Thanks for asking about Honu and Kai, we’re working on it as best we can. Nobody has yet stepped up to be the proud servants of our two Egyptian cat gods…They are sweet of temperament, don’t claw inside furniture when provided outside, love rubby’s and snuggles, not much for curling up on laps however.
In farm news you may care to be updated on, zucchini and beans are gushing in, with cucumbers and tomatoes in hot pursuit. Watermelon are setting fruit for the buyer and her family, the new owners of the farm this land. Oh boy, are they going to be surprised, she’s not a reader of ours, shhhhh, SPOILERS.

Honu and Kai
Greetings, everybody, and a happy Tuesday to you all. We’ve now reached “urgent plea” status. Our kitties are still looking for a nice new home. If you or someone you know have a good home and room in your hearts, please reach out to Noel at 253-549-3171. We and all of our family of friends are anxious for them. We got them from the Humane Society as kittens at about three-four months old. You have all shared in their adventures growing up.
They are three years old, great companions, and low maintenance. Experts at mousing, ratting, lizarding, a random squirrel you may not like, they’d be ideal. If you are a bird watcher, and want lots of wildlife…well they’re more indoor/outdoor cats.
Why we need to rehome them. They’re beloved and true family members, being excellent survivors here in the great northwest. They are used to this ecosystem, not harpy eagles, ocelots, pumas, and others of the jungle wilds, with no biological parents to introduce them to jungle predators and quarantine. All joking aside, we don’t want them to be snack food, but valued members of a household team.

New Beginnings
Some of you folks might remember Todd and Kim our friends who used to run a raw milk dairy way back six years ago being blogged about? I hope so…these were the kind of friends who would give you the shirt off their backs. Always there when you need them.
Todd an older, slightly shorter version of Grizzly Adams, Kim a petite lass with silver kissed hair and former postmistress of Glenoma. With the little dairy business, they also only got two months off farm over the last 10 years! Not able to visit much with family and friends alike. Todd sold their milk for other farm animals and cows that were too dry to provide milk for their own calves…
We aren’t the only two couples who sacrificed mightily to provide for America. The state of farming in America, and the sacrifices made to do all of it. It takes a toll on marriages and couples alike, if your reading this likely again it means you care.
As we sat around a BBQ at 10:00 PM (1 AM for most folks not farmers), we traveled memory lane, sharing laughs, as well as stories, both of success & failure. Todd and Kim have likewise sold their 20 acre farm, and are moving to Idaho. Far from Washington State, they will create a new homestead that is payed for outright.
Listening to frogs, owls, coyotes and unknown mystery sounds. The cows lowing just so in the firelight dancing heavily with shadows in dance. Smelling in deeply the thick wood smoke of the BBQ, and watching the flames with sturdy chairs. Drinking beers and hooting with laughs and stories, with plans of less work and more important things for this last chapter in life.
We’ll miss you Todd and Kim, honest, hard working friends that are as loyal and generous as any you’d ever meet. If you are dreaming of life changes, the moral of the story is take steps to make it happen. Even if it never happens, you’re moving forward in life in a positive way…just my opinion…

Friday Reminder
Good morning, Everybody, and greetings from the Glen! Wow, we only have 11 weeks left together, before the Puyallup and Packwood Markets flee the season, and harvest slows to a trickle. If you like or love Bates Family Foods pickled goods, you must see us this oir next week. Why? We are almost out of our savory items, then they are gone. Some inventories of jams are beginning to run low as well; others, like Kiona raspberry and Lady Marionberry are in very good supply, along with Angry Redhead and Devil’s Table. We’ll have some great farm freebees again with this week’s BFF purchases; next week is the last week we have the farm, so come and get them while we can pass them along to you…
We look forward to seeing you at the “Mark”-et, as I make my triumphant return, don’t let a few raindrops chase you away. They won’t add up to a northwest sneeze, you got me…Last week you guys overwhelmed Noël (in only the very best way), so I’m coming out of market retirement through most of the rest of this season.

As Promised, Yes We’re Still Here…
Goooood Mornin’, Y’all, and greetings from the Glen! Daylight’s about to get burning, so we won’t bend your eyes and ears too long today. So many massive changes, I’ll give you a list of what we’ve sold or given away in our labor to change lives. On that score: two freezers, one Hank the Tank rototiller, two nightstands, a queen size bed, 25 lbs. of meat, irrigation system, dining room table and chair set, tools and power tools, collapsible three tables, more to go and we really are moving.
It hit last night like a sledgehammer; when Hank, our large rototiller climbed up the ramps and into a fellow farmer’s van from Snohomish. We can’t effectively farm Rainy Glen Farms without this quarterback, the team is DONE. Honu and Kai, our cats, won’t come into the house much anymore fearing all the change. Noël and I get those emotions right now… however, deeper sleeplessness and thoughts ensued in the night.
We you make food for other you accept certain responsibilities, the act of providing food for someone else is sacred in many ways. “I’ll make food for you”, says I’ll take care of your need of hunger, nourishment, flavor, comfort, and so much more. Through Bates Family Foods we’ve come to know you, your needs and wants in your foods, and we’ve shared so many of the moments of discovery of our foods with you over the years. Thanks for all the love, appreciation and incredible support that you’ve shared with us over the years.
Last week people officially found out we’re done, so people bought cases of beloved products that are part of birthdays, “I love you’s”, births, anniversaries, and thousands of Thanksgivings and Christmases. We know you’ve shared our passion for what we do. Providing you all the best of the best, from enhancing your table to your late night snacks.
Have a wonderful day and we’ll see you back here tomorrow.

Family U-Pick
“Family first” and the great u-pick, whittled down to our in-laws… Well, the nieces and nephews are at the age where being young, free, and beautiful in America still counts…their 20’s. Our in-laws, wise in the ways of the world, forged their way to deep wilderness of Glenoma for an energizing visit! This is their first ever trip to the Glen, and they enjoyed the basic and bonus features guided premium package family tour.
Beside the tour, about ten half flats of berries were picked, a half full produce box of beans and onions, a box of basil, and cabbages with carrots. Also, cannot forget about those Jalapeños! Needless to say, I was hustling while Noël was a market. We threw in a half gallon of honey, tomatillo salsa, Habañero Carrot hot sauce and spicy sambal jars just to round out their trip. They’re in charge of disturbing to out for their house, and four nieces and nephews. Sunday morning, I was picking for Colin and his roommate a box of produce as he made his last appearance on the farm.
As always for visitors, Scott and Tina, on their first trip to Rainy Glen, were impressed with the size and scope of the operation. Touring orchards and vineyards, veggie fields to hives, their walking shoes got put to the test as cooling clouds drifted by on the fairly warm July day.
Noël was in a mad dash to put away market, vacuum, and do a few last minute details before her brother got here. Getting the house presentable though in the middle of move, no easy feat. A heartfelt thank you to them for helping us give berries and produce a good home!
Well, friends and fans alike it’s 4:10 AM, dark, and I need to study some Spanish, before the sun slips into the dawn skies for another beautiful day in the farmer’s playground (for now).

How do You Explain Their Farm to New Owners?
No…really! I’m guessing here. Tales from the farmside…
Good morning and greetings from the Glen! As a farmer you have to plan on everything and count on nothing. Also, we are now deep in harvest season. Zucchini, summer apples and a cavalcade of crops are ready or on the cusp of ready. Hay Caramba! Some things like beans have to be picked every day or two, or they quit producing new crops, oh man!
We got an 11th hour reprieve, with the closing date moved from Aug. 5th to Aug. 13th. While not the original, ultimate contract closing date of the 28th, it still helps – A BUNCH - muy bueno! This will allow us some latitude to clean the house and farm up a bit more that we were looking at. We want to leave the new buyer the farm in great working order where we can.
Remember we’re packing, giving and selling most of our worldly possessions all the while… that’s another blog unto itself…
Here’s what I’m doing and or planning: using maps, farm books (which has been explained in prior posts), and garden tags. Tags will be put on rows and trees, demarcating their individual types, along with maps. The farm book will have a list of approved vendors for fertilizer, folks with heating and cooling systems maintenance to use, the same with plumbers for the well house.
Well, that does it for today, stay tuned for more super-exciting news of our great adventure, and have a wonderful week!

Good morning, Everybody, and greetings from the Glen.
Our kitties are still looking for a nice new home. If you or someone you know have a good home, please reach out to Noel at 253-549-3171. We and our family of friends are anxious for them. We got them from the Humane Society as kittens at about three-four months old. You have all shared in their adventures growing up.

All joking aside, we don’t want them to be snack food, but valued members of a household team.
NOTE: During the excitement of last night’s thunderstorm, we watched one particular bolt hit “Hang Glider Hill” and start a fire. Noël and I reported it to the local fire department and Department of Natural Resources. Some rain fell with our thunderstorm; however less than a tenth of an inch and, obviously, less than enough to drown the fire. Today, other fires can still pop up. We’ll keep you posted. Now, back to CATS the unadulterated and unabashed feature of the day…
