The History of Duffy’s Delicious Candies

Duffy’s Delicious Candies was started back in 1922 by Charles and Elizabeth Duffy. Elizabeth had immigrated to the United States at the age of 12 from a small village in Germany near the Swiss border. There is little doubt that it was Elizabeth’s knowledge of candy making that was the catalyst for the business. The original business was run out of their

house at 228 South Fourth Street Gloucester City, New Jersey. The candy was originally made in the kitchen then sold on the front porch. Later as the business grew the candy was made in the basement and sold in the front living room. Charles Duffy passed away in 1949 and the business was passed on to his son James and his wife Genevieve. James and Genevieve moved into the house at 35 North broadway and built the store on the property in 1950. The store location at 29 North Broadway thrived and the need for expansion led to Genevieve’s rose garden being built over in 1954. The house and store are now physically connected. James Duffy retired in 1979 and passed the business on to his son Robert Duffy. Robert Duffy ran the business until 2001 when he became ill. Robert then passed the business onto his niece Barbara Hall (Morton) and her husband Michael Hall. Barbara had been working in the family run business over 27 years, since the age of 17. Barbara is the youngest daughter of Constance Morton (Duffy). Constance was the eldest daughter of James Duffy. In 2005 Michael retired from the police department & continued to make candy full time. He taught his daughter Michelle & son-in-law Eric to make candy and now Eric makes all the confections by using the same recipes handed down since 1922. All the confections are still made by hand in small batches. We only use the finest American made Peter’s Chocolate for coating. All ingredients are natural with no preservatives. Duffy’s has been in continuous operation for 99 years.

Introducing an Exclusive collaboration between Byers’ Choice and Duffy’s Fine Chocolates, Caroline to celebrate over a century of Easter Traditions at Duffy’s. She is going door to door selling Duffy’s Easter Candy with her miniature vintage order form and pulling her wagon filled with chocolate bunnies and a box of bite size coconut creams.

While Elizabeth & Charles Duffy were getting their chocolate business established, they recruited children from the church to go door to door selling their Easter Confections. The children would be so excited to sell because if they filled their sheet they received a free Coconut Cream Easter Egg! This not only enabled James and Genevieve to open our current storefront, but also helped make our Easter Eggs Famous! Last year one of our customers brought in extra copies of her 1968 Easter Order Form. This inspired us to collaborate with Joyce Byers and Melissa Palmer on bringing it to life. With a nod to the past and the present, this caroler is modeled after our daughter Caroline (sixth generation). She is holding that same vintage Duffy’s Order Form and going door to door with her wagon, hoping to sell enough to earn her a free Duffy’s Easter Egg!

Introducing an Exclusive collaboration between Byers’ Choice and Duffy’s Fine Chocolates, Elizabeth Duffy to celebrate over a century of Easter Traditions at Duffy’s. She is presenting a Duffy’s Box of Dark Chocolate miniature Eggs, a Dark Chocolate Bunny (made from one of our vintage metal molds), a 1lb. Dark Coconut Cream Egg & a basket filled with Easter Flowers.

Elizabeth (Bernreuther) Duffy emigrated from Bavaria as a teen with her sister and settled in Gloucester City Where She met Charles Duffy, who was a milk man at the time, & they were married in 1905. It is no doubt that Elizabeth was the catalyst for the chocolate business, that started out of their home in 1922. Elizabeth made candy in the kitchen and sold it off their front porch. Eventually, it took over the entire front room of their house. Children from their church would go door to door selling Duffy’s Easter candy to earn a free coconut cream egg of their own! Elizabeth & Charles purchased the house on Broadway, where their son James & his wife Genevieve raised their family and built our current storefront.
