🦐 Since the 1980s, we've lost roughly 75% of our domestic shrimp fleet.

That didn't happen overnight, and it didn't happen because fishermen suddenly stopped wanting to work. It happened because of cheap imports flooding the market, rising fuel and operating costs, increasing regulations, labor shortages, hurricanes, and shrinking profit margins.

I had an interaction today that reminded me why it's important to talk about this.

When you see the price of fresh Louisiana shrimp, understand that there is a reason behind it. I need fishermen to go out and catch those shrimp. As we say in my industry, shrimp don't just jump out of the water and land in an ice chest.To do that, I have to pay them a fair price. If fishermen can't make a living, they tie up their boats. When enough boats tie up, the fleet disappears. When the fleet disappears, seafood businesses like mine disappear too.

I'm not asking fishermen to work for nothing.

And I'm not working for nothing either.

No business can survive that way.

If someone asks the price and decides it's not for them, that's perfectly fine. We can shake hands, wish each other a good day, and move on. But what many people don't realize is that every time they push for prices that don't support the people harvesting and selling local seafood, they're helping push another shrimp boat out of business.

The reality is simple: if fishermen can't make money, they won't fish. If seafood businesses can't make money, they won't stay open. And once those boats and businesses are gone, getting them back is nearly impossible.

Supporting wild-caught Louisiana shrimp isn't just buying seafood. It's helping keep an entire industry, a way of life, and our coastal communities alive.
