New City Farm

New City Farm New City Farm, part of New City Neighbors empowers young adults with hands-on learning and work. We sell a majority of our food through CSA farm shares.

When you buy fresh produce, you're not only nourishing yourself but also creating jobs, leadership opportunities, and supporting local food resource centers. New City Farm is a 2 acre farm in the Creston neighborhood of Grand Rapids. The farm uses the best biological practices available to grow a wide spectrum of vegetables. We amend our soil annually with rich compost and we never use synthetic pesticides, fertilizers or GMO seeds to ensure our food is delicious and healthy. Shareholders pay an upfront fee at the beginning of the season in order to receive a box of fresh produce weekly from June-October. We set up our pickup like a farmer's market so our customers are able to have a good amount of choice in what they decide to bring home. Our staff are always available to answer any questions about new vegetables and can offer recipe ideas too. In a typical year our customers save 25% on their produce, making a CSA farm share a great way to save money. We offer full shares, half shares and quarter shares (which pick up every other week). We are also able to accept EBT and Double-up-food-Bucks for share purchases. Double-up-food-Bucks provide customers with a 50% discount on their shares, and we can work out a payment plan for all EBT customers. We strongly believe that fresh veggies should be available to everyone! Email for more share info at [email protected]. Most exciting of all, our farm exists to employ our neighborhood high school youth. The farm is a program of the faith based community development organization New City Neighbors. Annually we hire roughly 15-20 highschool youth to work within our organization's social enterprises. Students are involved in all aspects of the farm including customer service, marketing, newsletter writing and design, record keeping, and much more. If you are in high school and live in the Creston neighborhood go to our website www.newcityneighbors.org/farm to apply online.

Late summer, early Fall, has us planning the final pushes of harvest and planting. But one thing that will look a bit easier this year is the POTATO HARVEST!

Say hello to our newest employee - a potato digger. This machinery not only allows us to harvest quicker, but also assists in making farming a more accessible occupation for ALL humans . Thankful this week for having a tool that extends our ability to farm long after most folks have hung up their broadfork!

PS. What should its name be?

9/10/26 UPDATE! For folks interested last week, we are trying for round two, tomorrow, 9/11. Come join us in the peace of the Ball Ave Farm space as we install pollinator habitats. Looking forward to seeing you tomorrow morning at 9:30a ❤️

UPDATE, Update 😅: Due to weather and extreme heat/humidity anticipated this morning/afternoon we’ve decided to cancel our planting. We will move this to next week!

UPDATE as of 8:48am, 9/4. Due to forecasted storms this morning we are delaying volunteer start until 10:30a or 30 minutes after the last bit of thunder rolls - whichever comes last. September showers create great native flowers!

Two posts today because this one NEEDS attention: while our typical volunteer Fridays focus on harvesting at the farmhouse, tomorrow we will be installing 1,000 native plants at 2248 Ball Ave!

This is the culmination of one of new.city.neighbors second year farm apprentice’s focus project - they selected, and designed the site and NOW they need HELP installing.

Join our farm team and lend a hand. Or, come see the site and the finished planting in a few weeks for our open house. Either way, creating spaces for pollinators to thrive assists in creating a more robust food system for us all. 🐝🐞🦋❤️

Week 9 and feeling… HOT. This week saw us working in incredibly humid weather - isn’t it September? We are seeing the late summer veggies start to mature (cabbage and celery!), and watching our Fall peas germinate 😍

Looking forward to the last three weeks of Summer Shares and the big start to Fall and end of season pushes ahead.

Over the last two weeks, our farm team has been pulling poly over our three high tunnel frames with the help of our team, volunteers, and friends of the farm. A huge thank you to anyone who has helped with this HUGE job - from football field to an extended season growing space for our community and neighbors!

It’s a gorgeous week 8 of our Summer Shares. Periods of sun and shade have made for a great day on the farm - BUT most importantly, it’s a great day to grab a pizza (the pad Thai pizza is divine!)

Beneficial braconid wasps, non-beneficial farming in a flood plain, beautiful sunrises, and pops of color.

Every day is an adventure on the farm - some days we could do for a little less adventure. Germinating beets this season has been the worst, even as we continue to pull cucumbers from the vine (is this the longest cuke harvest ever?)
