New City Farm

New City Farm, part of New City Neighbors empowers young adults with hands-on learning and work. We sell a majority of our food through CSA farm shares.

When you buy fresh produce, you're not only nourishing yourself but also creating jobs, leadership opportunities, and supporting local food resource centers. New City Farm is a 2 acre farm in the Creston neighborhood of Grand Rapids. The farm uses the best biological practices available to grow a wide spectrum of vegetables. We amend our soil annually with rich compost and we never use synthetic p

esticides, fertilizers or GMO seeds to ensure our food is delicious and healthy. Shareholders pay an upfront fee at the beginning of the season in order to receive a box of fresh produce weekly from June-October. We set up our pickup like a farmer's market so our customers are able to have a good amount of choice in what they decide to bring home. Our staff are always available to answer any questions about new vegetables and can offer recipe ideas too. In a typical year our customers save 25% on their produce, making a CSA farm share a great way to save money. We offer full shares, half shares and quarter shares (which pick up every other week). We are also able to accept EBT and Double-up-food-Bucks for share purchases. Double-up-food-Bucks provide customers with a 50% discount on their shares, and we can work out a payment plan for all EBT customers. We strongly believe that fresh veggies should be available to everyone! Email for more share info at [email protected]. Most exciting of all, our farm exists to employ our neighborhood high school youth. The farm is a program of the faith based community development organization New City Neighbors. Annually we hire roughly 15-20 highschool youth to work within our organization's social enterprises. Students are involved in all aspects of the farm including customer service, marketing, newsletter writing and design, record keeping, and much more. Shareholders are going to need a bigger bag this week - the rainy cooler spring has allowed some absolutely gorgeous heads of lettuce to grow in our fields… and that’s not all. Three more weeks of our Spring CSA is left and then we will be welcoming in Summer. ❤️☀️🥬

Last week was a BIG week on the farm:
- Our amazing summer youth employees started!
- We had volunteers from Huntington Bank and Tabernacle Community Church Tabernacle Church
- Pollinator Partnership led the installation of a pollinator habitat with over 500 plugs at the Ball Site

Not to mention hosting the Organic Farmer Training cohort, harvesting, washing, and sending out soo many veggies to food access sites, Farmshare members, and farmers markets.

A big thank you to our shareholder David, for showcasing how you can prepare and use a variety of the items found in the share this week -

“Michigan strawberries and fresh mango on a bed of Buttercrunch lettuce with endive and a sprinkle of freshly grated parmesan cheese with a cranberry apple cider vinaigrette. For the main course a grilled beef tenderloin filet alongside brocollini with sliced garlic and pasta noodles with green garlic scapes, fresh lemon juice and grated parmesan. Bon appetit!

“We are so grateful for your donation this year! Our garden launch was a great success thanks in large part to New City Neighbors ! (I included a poem that one of our first time gardeners shared with the crowd - her response to gardening last year for the first time ever!)”

To date this year we’ve given over 2000 plants out at reduced pricing/no-cost to community resource partners and at local events.

We look forward to supporting gardens, and gardeners, for years to come ❤️
