I don't know why this bothered me so much. The isle reeked of damp cardboard and that distinct smell of egg shells. Musty.
We managed to be getting groceries this week at the same time they were stocking many of the isles. One of which was the eggs. For some reason seeing THIS MANY eggs piled up and stacked this way sent chills down my spine.
Now don't get me wrong, I've got nothing against poultry farmers and nothing against farms making a profit and a healthy living but this just didn't sit right with me.
The tag on the shelf read $5.09 for these eggs and I couldn't help but roll my eyes at the number of times people have asked me "can you do any better?" on my $5 price tag on fresh eggs here on the farm.
I watched a couple walk up and pick up 2 doz and everything in me wanted to scream and tell them "no!" but I bit my tongue..
Between record corporate profits for these grocery stores and the introductions of new lab grown meats and artificial preservatives and Lord knows what else we haven't yet been told about it just sickens me to darken the doors of a grocery store. It makes me physically ill to watch hundreds of our hard earned money be spent on a handful of items that a year ago would have amounted to tens of dollars..
We desperately need more farmers markets and better accessibility for them. More promotion of local markets and less bail outs for gigantic corporations who are telling the farming what they're going to pay for products, not the other way around.
