As we move the chickens across the pasture, they are constantly getting access to fresh ground and new Iron Clay Peas to peck and scratch through. Watching them work their way through a pasture full of forage is exactly what we like to see!

The Platt Family has been in the cattle business for six generations and has over 20 years of experience raising All Grass (Forage) Fed Beef, a unique label of grass-fed beef. Our cattle only eat high-quality grasses, forages and legumes grown in our pastures and hay that we grow and bale ourselves. They are NOT fed or supplemented with any grain, animal by-products, GMOs or soy. Truly raised 100% on grasses, forages, and legumes.

We have a closed-loop system where we only sell livestock bred, born, and raised on our ranch, so we can 100% tell YOU what practices were used to produce their food. Our livestock are NEVER given antibiotics, hormones, steroids, or mRNA vaccines.

We are committed to regenerative ranching by managing our livestock and land to build soil health, capture carbon, and restore natural ecosystems. We use organic fertilizers, regenerative grazing practices, and absolutely no commercial fertilizers, pesticides, or herbicides. Other practices include rotational grazing, no-tillage planting, multi-species cover crops, roller chopping, targeted goat grazing, and riparian buffers.

In recent years, we have expanded our operation to accommodate new livestock. All Grass Forage Fed Lamb and Goat, and Pasture-Raised Pork, Poultry and Eggs. All raised by us on our ranch.

How to Raise Chicks on Pasture from the Start

For the past 2 to 3 years, we’ve been raising our chicks on pasture from day one instead of starting them in a traditional brooder box. We’ve seen great results with their health and love being able to introduce them to a pasture environment right from the start.

The chicken tractor essentially becomes their outdoor brooder. It gives the chicks access to fresh grass while still providing the shelter, warmth, food, and water they need during those important first few weeks.

As the chicks grow, become more active, and start exploring more of the tractor, we begin moving it regularly. This gives them a fresh environment to explore while helping keep their living area clean.

This is also our first time raising chicks on pasture planted with Iron Clay Peas, so we are excited to see how they take to them as they grow! The peas provide plenty of vegetation for the chicks to explore, peck at, and eventually forage through.

Roller chopping is an excellent alternative to mowing when it comes to cleaning up a pasture. A roller chopper is a heavy duty agricultural implement that features a large steel drum equipped with hardened cutting blades. As it rolls across the pasture, it cuts and lays down unwanted vegetation while only slightly indenting the soil surface, which can improve water infiltration.

Unlike mowing or more aggressive land clearing methods, roller chopping does not disturb the roots or crowns of the existing grasses. This allows the desirable forage to continue growing while the chopped vegetation decomposes. As that plant material breaks down, it returns valuable organic matter to the soil, helping improve soil health and providing nutrients that encourage stronger, healthier pasture growth.

Another advantage of roller chopping is that it requires less power than operating a rotary mower. Our tractor can easily pull this set of roller choppers at roughly half of its available engine load, compared to running a large mower that often keeps the tractor working near full load. Because the engine is under less strain, it uses less fuel, reducing both operating costs and emissions while accomplishing the same pasture management goal.

No-till planting is one of the many regenerative practices we have utilized on our ranch for over 20 years. Right now, we are planting iron clay peas for our cattle to graze on.

No-tillage planting is the agricultural technique of planting grasses and forages without disturbing the soil. The no-till planters create a narrow furrow in the shape of a V with enough space to plant the seeds. The furrow is closed, and the seed is ready to grow. The seed can now utilize all of the organic matter that would have been lost in conventional tillage. In conventional tillage, the soil would have been overturned, exposing the organic matter to the atmosphere, which results in the organic matter oxidizing into carbon dioxide.

No-tillage planting also reduces erosion in the field. Existing grasses and forages are maintained on the soil surface, allowing the soil structure to remain intact, which helps resist wind and water erosion. Additionally, no-tillage planting promotes a healthier soil. The plant residue will decompose at a natural rate. The number of microorganisms will increase, which means more organic matter will be converted into usable forms of nitrogen and phosphorus for the grasses and forages.

We’re incredibly thankful for Mr. Chuck and the time he has dedicated to helping us on the ranch. While he was planting, we were able to tackle other ranch projects. Thank you again!
