Earlier today I returned to our store after dropping eggs and meat at two different food pantries and realized I had left our back door open by accident while I was gone for about an hour and half. This afternoon I realized we were missing four 5 lb. jugs of honey off our retail shelf. As far as I can tell nothing else is missing.
Now, we are a non-profit that gives food away. We literally let people come in and take food off our shelves for free. That’s part of our mission. However, we have limits around what we are willing to give away and when. 20 pounds of honey worth $130 is not something that we would give away. If someone came in and took eggs, produce, milk, and even some meat, I wouldn’t even care. I’d prefer they asked us first, but that’s it.
We give away food and we also sell it. Our sales help support our organization and its mission.
If the person who took the honey reads this or someone who knows them reads this, we will take it back no question asked. We have zero interest in involving police over something like this. You can drop it off outside off hours when no one is here. If you are hungry, we have food for you. But please respect us and our mission by not stealing and deceiving.
To be clear - this post is not intended to invite resentment toward whoever took the honey or people in general. We have faith in the basic goodness of people. But I wanted to take this opportunity to demonstrate what our values and mission are and invite some sort of repair if possible.
