Peter and Helen Allen will host their annual "Open Garden" Saturday and Sunday, Sept.11 and 12 from 10:00 to 4:00 at 131 Deer Haven Dr., Hamilton. About 500 dahlias in one place, many having won ribbons in the recent Ravalli County Fair. Car pooling is encouraged. We hope there won't be an early frost, which would cancel the event.

For those wondering, yes, we plan on attending the first five of the Hamilton Farmers Markets. We'll have Helen's dahlia tubers, Peter's breads, and the usual scones, cookies, and friands.

There are several ways to support the Society. This is just one of them. We can't go without the support of our community and our fans.

We are the Montana A Ca****la Society! Our little band of intrepid troubadours is from a very rural part of Montana – so small and remote that we are classified as Rural/Frontier. We range from school teachers, farmers, student, professionals to soap makers, retired folks and homemakers. And WE...

On a recent trip we had "kolaches" for breakfast in Provo, Utah. They were delicious, so I came home and started research and development. This week we'll offer a few at market.

Kolaches are of Czech origin - a small bun with a filling of cream cheese and jam. Try one with your morning coffee.

Winter is the time to try some new baked goods. These "Mallorcas" looked very good in one of my bread books, so I had to try them. Light, and not too sweet. Great for breakfast.

You can see why they used to call these "Dinner Plate Dahlias." The annual "Open Garden" event for this year will be Wednesday, August 31st and Sunday, September 4th, from 10:00 to 4:00. Helen guesses there are about 900 dahlia plants in all, although not all are blooming well.

This will be the last weekend in which we sell dahlia tubers at Farmers Market. These tubers really need to be in the ground, so check for some bargain prices on whatever is left.

We'll have most of the usual breads, but will substitute cinnamon swirl loaves for the Honey/Oatmeal loaves.

We skip "Bitterroot Day" because it's between tuber sales and having any produce to sell.

Farmers Market tomorrow - lots of dahlia tubers, plus Dutch Crunch (aka 'tiger bread'), caraway rye, baguettes, friands and cookies. Come see, come buy!

04/26/2016

Hamilton Farmers Market begins Saturday, May 7th. We'll be there with freshly baked breads and lots of dahlia tubers.
