I’ve got a builder who started my deck yesterday, and I’m a little unsure about the frame that’s been built so far. Because there’s very limited clearance under my back door, they’ve used 2x2 timber for the frame. I always thought 4x2 laid flat would be the minimum, but I’m not an expert.
The deck starts on a concrete area outside the door and then spans onto a grass section. The posts in the grass are 4x2, but I thought they would normally be 100x100 posts. I also expected the framing over the grass to be 4x2 installed upright rather than 2x2.
Am I right to be concerned, or is this a common approach for low-level decks? The builder is happy to discuss alternatives and work towards a solution, so I’d really appreciate any advice from those with more experience.

Client is trying to withhold the final payment over the deck footings, saying the posts “aren’t centered enough” and that it looks unsafe. In reality, the brackets are fully secured, the load is sitting solid, and the beam has proper full contact where it actually matters.

I know closed stringers would look better. But the MIL didn’t want to buy more lumber.
