Shared from a friend….
Last Saturday on my drive home from my walk, I noticed no cookers out front of the store. The feeling that came on me I wanted to share and also thank you for your life’s work. These words came to me…share if you like.
No More Smoke
Today I drove by there
I’m terribly, terribly sad
There’s no more smoke on Sloan Street
And I miss it real bad.
The last of the small ones
At one time there were lots
This one went longer
Cooking pork burgers and brats.
Generations of Allens and staff
Have shared smiles everyday
Have to cook my own damn ham
On the next holiday!
You couldn’t beat their meat
Fresh cut for goodness sake
And how bout that bologna spread
Like your momma used to make.
No more noon-time skedaddle
To grab a sandwich
Then sit on the wall
Overlooking the ditch.
All gone by the wayside
A deserved rest from life’s work
Time, travel and family
A well deserved perk.
So…no more Saturday morn fires
For ribs, chickens and such
There’s no more smoke on Sloan Street
And I don’t like it very much!
