2026 Hartwell Farmers' Market

We are open on Saturdays from 7am until noon unless we sell out earlier. What you see on our tables is fresh from our gardens, ovens and fingers.

We have produce, eggs, baked goods, handcrafts and such, with the proviso that we have to grow or make everything we sell. We are not resellers. If it didn't come from our land or home, we must tell you where we got it. We also must abide by USDA regulations for what can be sold with and without special licenses. All eggs are sold by a person with a candler's license. All plants must be sold by a

person with a plant license. Certain baked or canned goods need a license, but all that we sell do not. Most of the growers use organic methods. They may or may not be organically or naturally grown certified. You are free to ask anyone if they use chemicals. Please feel free to ask us anything about our items and/or practices. VENDOR MEMBERSHIP
Our annual membership is $10 for the season, which includes both Saturdays & Tuesdays. You may also pay by the day at $2.00 per day. All items allowed for sale must be grown, baked, or crafted by yourself, and must come from Hart County or any counties bordering Hart County, including counties in South Carolina. Items allowed include: fresh fruit & veggies, live plants, herbs, cut flowers, honey, jams, jellies & preserves, fresh baked breads, pies, & cookies. We now accept vendors offering locally hand-crafted items. Crafts are limited to 50% of your products offered for sale. In other words, a 50% product to craft ratio. Product is defined as produce, flowers (cut flowers, live plants), baked items, jams, and jellies, honey, etc. 50% is a benchmark and does not mean a literal even split (meaning: one week it may be heavier in one direction or the other based on the growing season). Vendors selling non-craft items may offer for sale up to 50%, items from another grower as long as they also offer at least 50% of their own products. The other 50% of product must also follow the Hart County and surrounding counties limits. You may sell eggs, if you hold a Georgia Candlers Permit. All live plant sellers must obtain a Live Plant License
from the Georgia Department of Agriculture. Any other items that are preserved or canned, ex: pickles, canned fruits, salsa, chow-chow may be sold only with a certification from the Georgia Department of Agriculture. We will supply vendors and prospective vendors with the contacts information to obtain these special permits. Scales are permitted only with approval by the
Georgia Department of Agriculture. We will gladly assist you with any of these permits
and other questions you might have.

For everyone wanting corn: Cole's Sweet Corn will have TWO trucks arriving with Silver Queen and Bicolor corn. Y'all Come! Trucks usually arrive around 0730.

Happy Father’s Day weekend to all our dads. We will have some fantastic items to add to your celebratory bar-b-que this weekend.

FIRST: CORN If everything goes well on Friday, we will have the Cole’s Sweet Corn truck arrive around 0730 with a bed filled with Bicolor corn. If something happens, you can stop by the homestead in Sandy Cross, Hwy 51, on the other side of Royston just before you get to Hwy 106.

SECOND: PEACHES The Chitwood Orchard stand will be opened sporadically until later in the season. Keep an eye opened for announcements, but please don’t bombard them with requests for updates. They will let everyone know when peaches are ready to harvest.

THIRD: TOMATOES Yes, tomatoes arrived last Saturday, and they were tiny salad to whopper sized beefsteaks. Come check them out. You’ll find them on several of the tables including Don, David, Zoe, the Lairds, Nick and May.

We never know who will have enough produce to bring, but let’s see what the regulars are planning to offer at the market THIS Saturday –

MEAT
Mr. STRICKLAND’s beautiful Akaushi (wagyu) beef will be a perfect treat for Father’s Day. Stop by and see what he has available, even if you have to pick it up later.

MAY’S Green Acres farm has also been harvesting carrots, lettuces, green onions, new potatoes, Rattlesnake beans, arugula, kale, rosemary and Swiss Chard. Blue Lake green beans might be ready this week. Come see what she finds in her garden.

NICK’S Little Friends Farmstead is also harvesting: red and green CABBAGES for your cole slaw needs, Russian kale, Contender green beans, potatoes.

As we get farther into summer, and lake visitors are dropping by, it’s time to remind everyone about what you will find in our market. EVERYTHING is either grown or produced by the person who brought it. We are NOT resellers, so we don’t go to the state market, buy a box of produce and try to sell it as our own. Occasionally we do have items from our neighbors, but we are upfront with that information. Everything is offered fresh and better than we ourselves would have it.

Also, in the early morning hours of summer, everything is at its peak freshness, and our regulars know to get it while it’s there to be got. If you are looking for a particular item, it may no longer be on the tables at 10 or 11am. Set those alarm clocks for best advantage. We open at 7am.

One last thing. We are not a craft fair, but about 16 years ago we amended our by-laws to include crafts constituting less than 50% of our offerings. That’s why you will see such items as Shirley’s jewelry and handcrafts, the dog/cat toys at Jennah’s table and the paintings at the Ripley Girl’s table. Again, they were made with our own hands and never a resell item.

The RIPLEY GIRLS, have beautiful, big blueberries along with veggies or herbs from their garden. Their blueberries align with the standard pricing of $4/pint and $20/gallon.

MAY’S Green Acres farm has been harvesting several types of squash, pickling and burpless cucumbers, lettuces, green onions, new potatoes, Rattlesnake beans, arugula, kale, rosemary and Swiss Chard. Blue Lake green beans might be ready this week. Come see what she finds in her garden.

NICK’S Little Friends Farmstead harvest: possibly Russian kale and collards, definitely cabbages, Poinsett and Lemon cucumbers, Contender green beans, new potatoes, yellow squash/zucchini. His small super good tomatoes are starting to turn red, and he might have a slicing tomato or two, if they continue to ripen.

Possible tables:
DAVID still has cucumbers, yellow squash and zucchini. Fingers crossed for a tomato or two.
JENNAH should be picking blueberries now.
DON should have squash and cucumbers.
ZOE of Ray Farms should have squash, zucchini and cucumbers.

BAKED GOODS
AMANDA will be bringing her regular sourdough loaves, garlic herb loaves, jalapeno loaves and her cinnamon rolls. Specials will include blueberry rolls and honey wheat bread.
LYDIA will be making apple cinnamon muffins.
It all sounds so delicious – blueberry rolls and cinnamon rolls. My favorites!

LHYN will have her well known spread of pound cakes, cookies, fruit breads and possibly a blueberry or an apple pie at the market this Saturday. She will also have jams and jellies and preserves.

SHIRLEY always has a table filled with the best pies, tarts, fruit/vegetable breads and cookies. The pies/tarts are pecan, sweet potato and pineapple so far this season. Talk nice to her and she might bring you a buttermilk pie.

The month of June has returned with its early-to-work mornings and dreamy afternoons. It also burst forth with more summer produce coming on the tables. No, we don’t have tomatoes yet, but we’re getting close to making a thick ‘mater sammie and eating it under a spreading oak tree. Growers are estimating 2 weeks to start, though there may be some cherry tomatoes this Saturday.

Update on the corn – fields were planted late, due to the dryness, but the recent rains have revitalized the crop and it looks like we might have fresh corn for the 4th of July picnics. Fingers crossed!

Blueberries! The Ripley Family Homestead girls are bringing their freshly picked blueberries to the market. They have several varieties including the first of the season, Tift Blue. Several more of us will have blueberries in a couple of weeks. I’ve been dreaming of blueberry pancakes, blueberries by the handful, luscious desserts, and the list goes on.

MEAT

The RIPLEY GIRLS, Amelia and Laurel, are back with beautiful blueberries along with jalapeno/cubana peppers and basil. Their blueberries align with the standard pricing of $4/pint and $20/gallon.

ZOE, from Ray Farms, will be returning to the market with yellow squash, zucchini and pickling cucumbers.

MAY’S Green Acres farm has been harvesting several types of squash, pickling and burpless cucumbers, lettuces, green onions, new potatoes, Rattlesnake beans, arugula, kale, rosemary and Swiss Chard. Come see what else she finds in her garden.

NICK’S Little Friends Farmstead will be harvesting Contender green beans, Kale, red and green cabbages, new potatoes and perhaps the last of the radishes/lettuces. Soon to harvest: Poinsett cucumbers, Zapallo del Tronco squash, Lemon cucumbers and tomatoes.

DAVID plans to return with Straight Neck yellow squash and Black Beauty zucchini. He’s treating his tomatoes with extra care and hopes they will blush with redness pretty soon.

If DON’s garden plots survived the recent storm, he might have Sugar Snap peas, some squash, kohlrabi and maybe a cucumber or two. He planted 200 tomato plants, so we’re hoping the fruit stayed on the tomato vines.

Memorial Day. I’m a little old fashioned. I’ll be remembering folks I lost, due to their military service, this weekend. Some were valiant heroes, and others died from their own demons, but they all deserve a remembrance from those of us who knew them.

Peach season will be starting a little late. According to the Chitwoods, and others, the late freeze took out the early blooming varieties. Never fear! There will still be peaches. Earliest date expected is the July 4th weekend. For those who like a particular variety, expect to see the following: Winblo, Red Globe, Majestic, Loring, Cresthaven, July Prince, Carolina Gold, and Jefferson.

Honey! Did someone mention fresh-from-the-hive raw honey? Get it quick! You’ll find it on May’s table. It’ll be gone before you know it.

The weather has not been kind to us growers this season, but you will find a bountiful amount of beautiful produce on May’s and Nick’s tables, and the bakers have been busy in their kitchens. We may be a small group, but we always seem to be able to come through with some prizes to be taken home and thoroughly enjoyed.

MAY’S Green Acres farm is coming on strong. This week there might be carrots, lettuce (Buttercrunch, Red Salad Bowl and mixed), onions, arugula, bay leaves, potatoes, radishes, and Swiss chard. Of course, there’s no telling what else might just be ready to harvest by Saturday.

NICK’S Little Friends Farmstead will be harvesting Cherokee Lettuce, Russian Kale, Radishes, Beets, Yellow Squash & Zucchini and beautiful, tender Green Beans. Soon to be seen: cucumbers, tomatoes, red/green cabbages.

If available, DAVID plans to return with Straight Neck yellow squash, Black Beauty zucchini and pickling cucumbers.

DON will be back home this week. If he can get into his garden between rainstorms, he might have Sugar Snap peas, maybe some squash, kohlrabi and maybe a cucumber or two.

Memorial Day Weekend is upon us. We hope everyone stays safe. If you’re out on the lake, please obey all safety rules and enjoy your life. We really enjoy seeing you drop by the market.

The market this week – Don will take the week off. Amanda & Lydia return with their sourdough breads. David dropped by last week with squash. He says the tomatoes are doing well this year, so you might just see him this season. May has pretty carrots, and Nick’s stand is just ablaze with colors.

PRODUCE
MAY’S canopy shaded area is crowded with leafy greens, fragrant herbs, carrots, potatoes and plants for your garden. Easiest description is to just come see it for yourself, and pick something to take home from Green Acres Farm.

Meanwhile, NICK’S Little Friends Farmstead is giving May a nice bit of competition. He knows that he will be bringing Cherokee Lettuce, Russian Kale, Radishes, Beets, Yellow Squash and Zucchini AND Green Beans.

David might try to return with yellow squash, Black Beauty zucchini and Blue Lake green beans.

This coming Saturday is quite a busy day for the middle of May. Not only do we have the market in the morning, but it is National Armed Forces Day along with the FA cup finals (British soccer) the final day of the PGA Championship (golf in Pennsylvania), and the Preakness Stakes (aka the Run for the Blackeyed Susans in Baltimore, MD). If you don’t want that much excitement, you can celebrate National Love a Tree Day resting in a hammock while you sip your favorite concoction in honor of World Whisky Day. The afternoon is a lovely time to commune with nature in whatever manner you enjoy the most.

The market this week – Yellow Summer Squash, maybe some Green Beans, Green Peas, and new Potatoes. Other items that we expect to see this coming Saturday. . . .

MEAT
Check with Mr. STRICKLAND for some pretty, well-marbled beef selections. Folks have come from far and wide to check out what he has in his cooler.

MAY was given permission to resume limited duties by her physician, so she has returned with tables filled with produce. This week you should see Spinach, Lettuce, mix Swiss Chard, Cilantro, Baby collards, Kale, Green onions, Bok choi, Butter crunch, Red Salad Bowl and Mixed lettuces, bay leaves, AND whatever else is ready to harvest.

Meanwhile, NICK’S Little Friends Farmstead is coming in with a bountiful and colorful harvest. He plans to have Red Russian kale, Queensland lettuce, Cherokee lettuce, Beets, Radish, Garlic, Sugar Snap peas, Arugula, Swiss chard, collards, AND he has a few early yellow summer squash as well as small potatoes! He’s also hoping to bring green beans.

Last week DON brought some broccoli, snow peas and a couple of kohlrabi roots from his multiplot farm along with packages of peanut brittle. Wondering what he will be able to harvest this week.

BAKED GOODS

AMANDA and LYDIA will return next week.

JENNAH has returned. Best Wishes on her recent marriage. She might be able to bring some of her blueberry bread that was such a hit last year. Fingers crossed.

JENNAH brought in some beautiful Easter Lily plants last week. She’s bound to have something else to plant this week.

In case we forget to mention it at the market, Happy Mothers’ Day to all of our ladies whether you have human children, furry children, winged children or just nature at large. Looks like it will be a fantastic weekend to celebrate.

If you visited the market last week, you might have noticed that some folks were absent. It just happens. Sometimes we get surprise vendors and sometimes folks oversleep. We still had a nice turnout to give visitors something to take home. Again, we are heavy in baked goods, but there’s nothing like a homemade breads/cakes/pies for your weekend brunch. Invite some folks over to help you enjoy the treats.

MAY is recovering well at home at Green Acres. We had some greens from her garden last week, and we hope to see that again, but it depends on if there’s anyone to pick it. Leo will do his best. May’s harvest will either be at Shirley’s or Lhyn’s tables.

Meanwhile, NICK’S Little Friends Farmstead is willing and able to make up for some of the loss. He will have Red Russian kale, Queensland lettuce, Cherokee lettuce, Beets, Radish, Garlic, Sugar Snap peas, Arugula, Swiss chard, collards, AND he has a few early yellow summer squash! He might also have green beans and potatoes if they are ready to harvest.

Last week Don brought some broccoli, sugar snap peas and a couple of kohlrabi roots from his multiplot farm. Wondering what he will be able to harvest this week.

MEAT

BAKED GOODS

AMANDA will have her infamous sourdough, jalapeno and garlic/herb loaves, cinnamon rolls with cream cheese icing, and special items include cinnamon raisin sourdough, breakfast bars and blueberry rolls with cream cheese icing.
LYDIA will have apple cinnamon muffins at her table. Please stop by!

LHYN’S KITCHEN will have her well known spread of pound cakes, cookies, fruit breads and possibly a blueberry or an apple pie. She will also have jams and jellies.

SHIRLEY has the absolutely best pies, tarts, fruit/vegetable breads and cookies. Surely missed them last Saturday!

PLANTS

DON had some plantable Celebrity tomato plants, and if you ask nicely, he also has a few Big Beef. He might have some annual flowers started and peanut brittle to snack on.

SHIRLEY’S Johnson Family Farm, and MAY’S Green Acres, have some beautiful perennial plants perfect for your garden. Every week the selection is different. I think May might have some vegetable plants as well. Leo sort of promised to bring some.

The Merry Month of May will have a damp start, but it’s a welcomed condition for the farms and gardens. I’ve seen some folks trying to get the corn in, but it’s a dry “row to hoe”. My asparagus is making an appearance, but I didn’t dare bring any to the market as it is so very tough – no rain. The rest of my garden has put itself on hold, or bolted, until it gets some moisture.

You’ll see quite a bit of baked goods this week. Be sure to come early, so you can pick up your weekend brunch. There are some heavenly selections to choose from.

PRODUCE
MAY is doing well at home, and she hopes to be back at the market in a couple of weeks. We might have a bit of harvest from her garden, but it depends on if there’s anyone to pick it.

BRANDON BOWEN (Bowen Family Farm) will be joining us this Saturday. Please welcome him in. He will be bringing: Pork steaks, ground pork, pastured eggs, biscuits, bread and muffins. You can also reserve chicken and or pork packages.

Welcome! Looking forward to the promised weekend rain. Oh, never fear! Unless it is pouring come early morning, the market will be up and running. It’s just that if we don’t get some of Nature’s thirst quencher soon, our summer gardens will be set back and spring veggies will fail. As it is, corn harvest will be late this year, and later means a good chance for insect invasion.

From dreary to hopeful, let’s see what might be on the tables this Saturday.

MAY will be homebound for a couple of weeks, but SHIRLEY will have the Green Acre harvest. Spinach, Lettuce, mixed Swiss Chard, Cilantro, Baby Collards, Kale, Green onions, Bok choi, Buttercrunch lettuce and, of course, yard plants which may include berry plants, blueberry plants and others.

NICK will be backing up the produce with Red Russian kale, Queensland lettuce, Cherokee lettuce, Beets, Radish, Garlic, Sugar Snap peas and Arugula. Swiss chard and collards might be ready this Saturday or next.

DON is back with samples of his harvest. He also has tomato plants ready for planting in your container garden.

AMANDA will be bringing cinnamon rolls with a choice of cream cheese icing or a coffee glaze, regular sourdough loaves, jalapeno and cheddar sourdough loaves, and look for LYDIA to bring something new in the form of a mouthwatering treat.
