503.573.KIND in 2000 by an Oregon native, the Peace of Soap® crafts 100% natural, artisan soap for local area farmers' markets, festivals and quality gift shops in the Pacific North

west. With a solid foundation of knowledge, and a strong dedication to quality, our artisan soap base is carefully crafted with pure olive and coconut oils then super fatted with a generous measure of botanical butters. Our artisan soap also contains wildcrafted medicinal herbs, goat and botanical milks, natural waxes, clays, minerals, grain and seeds for texture and color. Our products have never contained toxic chemical fragrances, dyes, surfactants or detergent foaming agents. They are not only bad for your body, they are destructive to the environment and are truly unnecessary to craft a high quality artisan product. We only use the best, pure plant essential oils for their natural aromatheraputic and skin benefiting properties. Each small batch is still hand stirred by our Master soap maker. We make every effort to reduce our operations carbon footprint. And by purchasing as many of the natural materials used to make our artisan soap from local eco-minded farmers and small businesses, we do our best to contribute to the local economy of Oregon. We have also made a conscious choice not to package our soaps. And by doing so, we are committed to doing our part in reducing unnecessary landfill waste. You can do your part by purchasing our soaps in their beautiful natural state and by recycling the bag you take them home in. We are very proud of the quality of our artisan soap and enjoy serving our community. We would love to hear from you, contact us anytime. Your Buds,

🌿 Herbalism in Bloom: Soothing Chamomile Facial Toner

In my last post, "A Tale of German and Roman Chamomile", we explored the unique charms of both chamomile varieties. While German chamomile is known for its digestive support and powerful anti-inflammatory compounds, Roman chamomile truly shines in aromatherapy. Its sweet, apple-like scent is a natural relaxant, perfect for calming blends, facial mists, and bedtime rituals.

This facial toner uses Roman chamomile distillate to soothe both the skin and the senses.

🌼 The Formula
• Roman Chamomile Distillate → A calming floral aroma that relaxes both mind and skin
• Lavender Distillate → Soft, balancing floral notes
• Aloe Vera Juice → Lightweight hydration
• Panthenol (Vitamin B5) → Supports the skin barrier
• Vegetable Glycerin → Draws moisture in for a dewy finish

Chamomile's aromatic compounds have long been used to modulate stress responses—helping you feel grounded inside and out. If you’re seeking a moment of calm, this is your gentle, aromatic ritual.

☮️ Hydrate your skin. Soothe your senses. Ah...Peace.

🌿 Herbalism in Bloom: Calming Tea for Stress

When we experience stress, the body shifts into sympathetic "fight or flight" mode. Stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline redirect blood flow away from the digestive system. That's why stress often shows up as stomach tension, nausea, cramping, bloating, changes in appetite, or even headaches.

At the center of this connection is the gut-brain axis—a bidirectional communication network between the brain and the enteric nervous system (ENS), often called the "second brain." The ENS resides in the digestive tract and helps regulate digestion, motility, and digestive secretions. When the brain is under stress, the gut responds—and when the gut is irritated or uncomfortable, the brain receives those signals.

This is where herbal support and simple ritual can be helpful.

🌼 Stress Support Tea Blend (per 1 cup)
• 1 cup – Distilled water
• 1 tbsp – German chamomile (dried flowers)
• 1 tsp – Peppermint (dried leaf)
• 1 tsp – Fennel seed (lightly crushed)
• 1 tsp – Honey (optional, added after steeping)

☕ Steep 10–15 minutes, covered. Strain, then add honey if desired. Sip slowly while warm.

🌿 Why these herbs?
• Fennel → A traditional carminative herb that helps ease bloating and supports digestive comfort.
• Peppermint → A classic digestive antispasmodic that helps relax smooth muscle in the gastrointestinal tract and may help relieve occasional gas and digestive tension.
• German chamomile → Rich in flavonoids such as apigenin and traditionally used to promote relaxation while supporting digestive comfort and healthy gut function.

🧠 The nervous system effect
These herbs don't just support digestion—they can also become part of a calming ritual that encourages the body to shift away from sympathetic "fight or flight" activation and toward parasympathetic "rest and digest" activity.

☕ The ritual matters too
The warmth of the tea itself plays a role. Taking time to sit, breathe, and slowly sip a warm beverage can promote relaxation and support the body's natural transition into a calmer state conducive to digestion and restoration.

🌿 In other words:
This isn't just tea—it's a moment of connection between the nervous system, the digestive system, and the simple act of caring for yourself.

🌿 Herbalism in Bloom: A Tale of German and Roman Chamomile

If there were a queen of herbal flowers, chamomile would wear the crown. In fact, it’s one of the most widely used flowers in herbalism across cultures and time. But here’s what many people don’t realize—there are two distinct chamomiles, each with its own flower power.

🌼 German Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla)

* Origin: Europe and Western Asia
* Traditional Use: Renowned for soothing digestion, calming the enteric nervous system, and also used in skin care
* Notable Compounds: Chamazulene and, α-bisabolol (gives the essential oil its distinctive blue color and calming abilities)
* Native to: Germany, Europe
* Plant ID: Annual, single flower per stem; taller growth; feathery leaves, hollow flower receptacle
* Uses: Often chosen by herbalists for its concentrated compounds, especially in skin care

🌼 Roman Chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile)

* Origin: Mediterranean and North Africa
* Traditional Use: Famous in calming bedtime teas, with a sweet apple-like aroma
* Native to: Europe and Mediterranean
* Plant ID: Perennial, forms a cluster of small flowers; shorter height; spreading leaves, solid flower receptacle
* Uses: Most commonly sipped as a tea and is prized for its floral-fruity palate and scent and gives this chamomile it's nickname "ground-apple"

Both are beloved in herbalism—German for its potent calming and skin healing effects and Roman for its gentle, comforting teas. Watch for upcoming posts where I'll share a soothing, synergistic chamomile tea recipe and a simple chamomile skin care mist...
