Growing Bigger: Expanding the Garden for an Even Better Harvest
By late June, it was clear that the garden needed room to grow. To support succession planting, improve spacing, and maximize production, an expansion plan was set in motion. The goal was to complete the project by November, starting with a simple but effective method: covering the area with plastic sheeting to naturally eliminate the existing grass and prepare the ground for future beds.
Then, in August, opportunity knocked sooner than expected.
With a new succession planting of lettuce ready to go, one section of the expansion was fast-tracked. A row of plastic was pulled back, the soil was prepared, compost was added, and a brand-new garden bed was born. The timing couldn't have been better. While squash and melon vines thrived on the warmth created by the remaining plastic-covered ground, the newly established bed quickly became home to lettuce and other fall crops.
Just a month later, the results speak for themselves. The lettuce is flourishing, new plantings are thriving, and the first phase of the expansion has already proven its value. Best of all, the process was simple, effective, and incredibly rewarding.
Once the squash and melon plants finish their season, work will continue on the remaining beds. When complete, the expansion will add four new beds measuring 2.5 feet by 50 feet each, significantly increasing growing capacity. Even more exciting, one entire bed will be dedicated to wildflowers, creating a vibrant habitat for pollinators that there simply wasn't room for this year.
This is only the beginning of the project, and future updates will showcase the step-by-step process behind the expansion. If the success of the first bed is any indication, the future of the garden is looking bigger, brighter, and more productive than ever. 🌱🌻🥬
