There is a secret hiding underground in your garden, and it will give you a lifetime supply of free plants. If you look right above the roots of an established rhubarb plant, you will find tiny pink buds. They are called petioles. Every single one is a brand new plant waiting to happen. To get them, you have to do the exact thing most gardeners are terrified to do. You have to take a sharp spade and slice the plant apart. People think this will kill a decade-old plant. It actually saves it. Without this, older rhubarb eventually crowds itself to death. You can turn two plants into five in less than an hour. And because they are already acclimated to your backyard, they won't go into shock like expensive nursery plants do. But you can only make the cut at a very specific time of year. Miss the window, and you ruin the plant entirely.
