I saw this picture last week and it made me smile. He was so excited about these potatoes — they were early that year, and he couldn't wait to dig them up and show me.

It's been four years since we've been able to talk to him. Four years since we've seen him fly by on the tractor. Four years since we've seen him out there planting.

Doug loved to talk farming. Give him five minutes and he'd tell you everything — the soil, the weather, what was coming up next in the fields. It was never just a job to him. It was his passion.

He would have loved seeing everyone out here enjoying the farm — picking, exploring, making memories on the land he cherished.

We miss talking to him. But we still feel him here — in the fields, in the harvest, in every bit of joy this place brings.

Day 20 - Greenhouse Growing

Last stop on our Where Your Food Comes From series — the greenhouse 🌱

This is where the growing never really stops. Through fall and winter, it's mostly greens, celery, onions, and radishes — crops that don't mind the cold as long as they've got shelter overhead. We water with drip irrigation for the beds, and overhead with a hose for anything that wants a good soak.

Come January and February, things start to shift. We swap in spring crops — tomatoes, cucumbers, beans — getting a jump on the season before it's even warm outside.

We keep the greenhouse anywhere from 45 to 68 degrees, depending on the time of year and what's growing. It's basically a bridge between seasons — always something coming out of the ground here.
