Living Aquaponics Inc Aquaponics Farm

04/03/2021

Aloha! It has been some time since we've posted. We are still farming with aquaponics and hydroponics in Kona and are busy building out our foodhub Big Island Farm Direct. The pandemic gave us the push we needed to launch a Kona based foodhub where we offer the community direct access to foods grown and produced in Hawaii. This Living Aquaponics page will be merged with our Big Island Farm Direct FB page soon so that we have one FB page to follow our farm and foodhub.

Hey FB friends.....Its been a long time! We have been busy over the last few years and its time to start updating on our farm. So much has happened so it may take several posts to bring everyone up to speed. To start we sold our farm in Honaunau to a then employee. This retained a young, new, dedicated farmer for Big Island! Our focus has been building out new farm location in Keauhou which is almost complete with final build out scheduled for this summer. We are still producing hundreds to thousands of pounds of healthy, vibrant veggies per week that are sold into the local food systems here in Hawaii. Here are a few pictures with a LOT more to follow :)

Farmers in the making! Noah and Isaac with their first crop. 37 Hawaiian chili peppers and 1 bag of basil. These are from plants they planted in their own garden and they have been caring for. This is a test run to see if they will continue to put the work in. Their 37 peppers and one bag of basil will go to the farmers market tomorrow and be sold at our farm booth. They will get the proceeds of the sale of these peppers and basil. If all of it is sold they will have $9.40 to split. First sales from their "mini farm" as they call it. My hope is to be able to teach them about growing food and to teach them the basics of the farming business. They are planning to add cucumber, more peppers, carrots, several herbs. Noah and Isaac have a goal of $20 per week each. We'll see if they get there :)

These guys are doing good things in the Bay Area. Taking a food desert in East Oakland and building an Aquaponics farm to feed their local community, supply local jobs and more...Their lead Aquaponics person is at our farm here in Hawaii right now checking out our farm. These guys are real, they are well on their way to making this happen but they need help. Please support these guys if you can, please share throughout your social networks. We need groups like this growing food in urban environments.

Thanks Big Island, we are honored!!!! As we transition from a small family farm to a much larger operation are excited about making an even bigger difference in our local food systems. Our new farm joint venture known as Ha Farms Inc is allowing us to expand commercial farming operations to a projected 4x larger with not only expansion in production areas on two separate farm properties but expansion into a large variety of crops! Our goal in 2016 is to break into the retail grocery store market where we hope to feed a lot more people living on Hawaii Island. With that said we are also expanding our wholesale and restaurant/resort markets. Mahalo Big Island, we don't think of ourselves as heroes but its great to be recognized :)
