‘Alaea is a volcanic clay that forms after thousands or tens of thousands of weathering cycles as rainwater, heat and oxygen break down lava. For that reason it is more prevalent on the older Hawaiian Island like Kaua’i than the younger ones. On Hawai’i Island most of our lava is more recent and ‘Alaea deposits are very limited. ‘Alaea contains a high amount of iron oxide which gives it is red color. Traditionally ‘Alaea is used in Hawaii medicinally as a paste for healing, in canoe building, as a dye and added to salt.

We are matching donations dollar to dollar this Giving Tuesday. Donor Match up to $5,000, after that the campaign continues until the end of the year. If you would like to support this is a great time to do so. 583,000 square miles of Marine Sanctuary in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, 1.2 million lbs of debris removed over the last five years, all by hand. There is one single organization that does this, hard to believe. The Sanctuary stretches 1,800 miles beyond Kauai and Niihau and is home to 70% of all coral reefs in the US, an estimated 14 million seabirds and 7,000 species. 57 tons of fishnets wash up on its shores and fragile reefs per year. This is an amazing organization and such important work, they have our full trust and we support them with 1% of our revenue every day.
