SU***DE BRIDGE
Su***de Bridge is a two-lane automobile bridge crossing Cabin Creek, just north of Secretary and East New Market in Dorchester County. It looks harmless. The bridge is low, the creek is not especially deep, and there is no dizzying drop. Yet for generations, locals have called it Su***de Bridge.
So how did it get its name? Tradition says several people deliberately ended their lives here. At low tide, some say a person could leap from the bridge and stand in the water. But the stories surrounding this quiet stretch of Cabin Creek are far darker.
The first victim was a postmaster from Hurlock who shot himself and fell into the water.
Then came a man known as Frog. Pete Moxey was only eight or nine years old when it happened. He remembered hearing that Frog had jumped from the bridge, struck his head on a piling and drowned. Whispers of foul play followed. But what was more disturbing: Frog's body was placed on a table in a nearby picnic area, where an autopsy was performed in the open air.
In 2005, the bridge was rebuilt. Moxey said it stood for only six months before another person went over the side. The man drove to the bridge, parked his car and jumped. Moxey helped pull his body from the water. “The blood soaked into the wood on the dock and it never washed away.” Moxey said the stain remained for about five years.
Today, the bridge carries plenty of local automobile traffic, partly because of the popular waterfront restaurant Su***de Bridge Restaurant. “I don't think the bridge is jinxed,” Moxey said. “Maybe it's just the name that brings them here.”
One night, a man was awakened by cries of “Help! Help!” He saw a car parked on the bridge and rushed out in a skiff. He found a woman in the icy water and pulled her to safety. When he tried to get her into the warm car, she said, “I don't want to get the seats wet. It's a new car.”
The water below Su***de Bridge looks quiet. But beneath that ordinary bridge are stories of death and mystery.
And if the locals are right, the darkest thing about Su***de Bridge may not be what happened there...but why so many came to end their lives.
