A Nasturtium Celebration—from Giverny to Ohio!

I am overjoyed by the show our nasturtiums have given us this year—wild, exuberant and absolutely spectacular!

But truthfully, it is the story behind the story that makes me laugh.

My visit to Monet’s gardens in Giverny inspired me—or perhaps I should say obsessed me! This is our first year celebrating nasturtiums in such abundance, and apparently they feel perfectly at home here at Hilltop Haven.

Meanwhile, Monet’s beloved gardens in France have been struggling through punishing heat.

What a wonderfully crazy twist: Monet’s flowers, inspired by Giverny, are prospering in Ohio!

We eat these edible flowers in our salads, decorate pastries with them and use their brilliant color wherever a little garden magic is needed.

With that in mind, I created Lemon Lavender Shortbread Cookies as the perfect vehicle—and the perfect flavor—for these beautiful blossoms: buttery shortbread, fragrant lavender, bright lemon glaze and a joyful scattering of nasturtium petals.

Today, I brewed a cup of tea, selected one of these pretty—and oh-so-delicious—shortbreads, and simply lived in the moment.

From Monet’s garden…to my garden…to the kitchen.

Zucchini, abundant, delicious and versatile. Here is the way we make Zucchini in our kitchens. Take Squash and Julienne slice, put on baking sheet, drizzle with Olive Oil, Balsamic Vinegar and a good sprinkle of our own Amazing Rub. 400 degree oven and. That’s 40 minutes.
I comes out so browned, tender and ready for any dish you want to put it in,or heck…just on it’s own.
Here we were prepping a lot, but decided to divert some to the Lunch Plates,
So glad we did…with a little Marinara, sprinkle cheese…YUM!

We have been making our Amazing Rub for over 15 years! And I am still thrilled when I get to test out a bag from new shipments! It’s for real, can’t imagine running my kitchens without the Amazing Rub line.
My favorite and first application is always this seared Salmon, and this time I used a 12 minute 400 degree sear in the Air Fryer, and it was simple and delicious!
