Most garlic farms are taking pre-orders right now on the summer garlic harvest, so understandably, some of you have been wondering when I will open pre-orders. My goal is to always under promise and over deliver: not the other way around. It's very tricky for a really small operation like mine to estimate the amounts of seed and culinary-grade stock that will come in, especially with all the variables that come with farming. Some of my more unusual varieties I only offer 5-10 pounds of to the public. I dread the idea of accepting payment only to find out at harvest that I didn't get as much of a variety as I thought I would, and having to inform the buyer that I can't provide what they expected. I would refund, of course, but it's not a good way to do business in my opinion.
Soooooo...I do not take pre-orders. At least not at this point; not until I am growing a lot more to be able to give myself more wiggle room in how much I can offer up for pre-ordering.
That said, I DO value a system that honors previous customers first. So that's why, when I am ready to open the store for garlic orders, I only open it to previous customers for the first 3 days.
Nobody who hasn't ordered in the past several years can order until AFTER those first 3 days.
I usually open the store for orders at the end of July. By then, all the garlic is cured, cleaned, and ready to ship immediately. Notice that the end of July shipping is MUCH earlier than any of the other garlic farms. Most garlic farms are located in the Northern states. I am in Southern Kansas, so harvest comes 4-6 weeks earlier for me, allowing me to send you your garlic well ahead of anyone else.
