๐Ÿ A single mason bee visits up to 2,000 flowers a day and pollinates 95% of them on contact. A honeybee pollinates about 5%. One small, quiet, solitary bee โ€” no hive, no swarm, almost never stings โ€” doing the pollination work of a hundred honeybees.

All she needs is a block of wood with holes drilled in it.

๐Ÿ The build:
- A block of untreated hardwood โ€” oak, maple, or a cut 4x6 post
- Drill 5/16" holes, 6 inches deep, spaced ยพ" apart
- Smooth each entrance โ€” splinters will block her from nesting
- Don't drill all the way through โ€” she needs a sealed back wall
- Alternative: bundle 6" lengths of natural bamboo or paper tubes

๐Ÿ The placement:
- 3-6 feet high on a south-facing wall, fence, or post
- Morning sun is everything โ€” she won't fly until her body warms up
- Within 300 feet of flowering trees or garden beds
- Sheltered from rain with a small overhang
- Set a shallow dish of damp clay or mud nearby โ€” she builds her egg chambers with it

๐Ÿ What to expect:
- Hang the house by early spring before fruit trees bloom
- She emerges when temps hit 55ยฐF and works for about six weeks straight
- You'll see her ferrying mud to cap each cell โ€” that means she's laying
- Each tube holds 6-8 eggs that overwinter and emerge the following spring

A $15 block of wood and a drill bit โ€” and every fruit tree, berry bush, and vegetable blossom within 300 feet gets the most efficient pollinator on the planet. ๐ŸŒฟ

Weโ€™re always proud to spotlight businesses that truly show up for our community, and DS Home Services is one of them. Beyond being valued vendors and supporters of The Hyde Park Farmers Market, they consistently give back in meaningful ways throughout the Hudson Valley. Take a look at just some of the incredible community impact theyโ€™ve made this month alone ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ’š

The bee you're trying to save isn't the one doing most of the pollination in your yard. North America has roughly 4,000 native bee species. One honeybee species gets the campaigns, the bumper stickers, and the documentaries.

Native solitary bees don't live in hives. They nest in the ground, in hollow stems, in tiny holes in old wood. They don't make honey. They don't swarm. Most of them can barely sting. And per flower visit, they transfer more pollen than a honeybee โ€” because they're messier, less efficient collectors, which means more pollen lands where the plant actually needs it.

Mason bees alone can pollinate an apple orchard with a fraction of the numbers a honeybee colony requires. Sweat bees handle low-growing wildflowers honeybees skip entirely. Mining bees work in cooler temperatures when honeybees stay in the hive.

๐Ÿ› What's already nesting near you:
- Small metallic-green bees on your flowers are sweat bees โ€” one of the largest native bee families, and they've been showing up every spring without a single headline
- Tiny holes in bare soil patches aren't ant nests โ€” mining bees raise their young underground, one egg per chamber, and they were there before you noticed
- A "bee hotel" houses mason bees and leafcutter bees, but the ground nesters outnumber them and just need a patch of undisturbed dirt

The honeybee got the brand. The solitary bees got the territory ๐ŸŒฟ
