Rowdy Ruby's Urban Farm

Rowdy Ruby's Urban Farm Independence Farmers' Market vendor. Also a place for hobbies and topics to do with homesteading. Let me know what you like! Feel free to join me on my adventure!

Gardening, keeping backyard chickens, mushroom hunting and cultivation, canning, curing food (just about any type of food preservation), and recipe testing and development are just a few of the topics I am always in the process of improving. I am a semi-retired career chef that finally has the opportunity to focus on our homestead.

First of all, THANK YOU!!! To all the brave souls who made it out to the market today. Let’s just say that the weather got a little Oregon-ish around noon to the point where we had to abandon ship and close early. So maybe an apology to those who came out when the sun did (about a half hour later as we were driving home soaked) and wonder what happened to the market…We will be back next Saturday and look forward to seeing you.

That being said, I wanted to do the perfect spring post, but drag something up from the archives…

Have you ever thought about cultivating your own mushrooms? It’s not as difficult as you might think, and spring is the perfect time to install a wine mushroom/king stropharia/burgundy mushroom patch. I published a post in 2016 when we did our first one.

* Latest note: you can totally get away with doing one layer, but if you want to keep it going, you have to plan on adding more hardwood chips to feed the mycelium. They can go through some chips in a season! So worth the effort though. They are so delicious and fairly easy to grow compared to other varieties.

Among our other items, we are proud to be able to feature the AMAZING Oregon Sunstone at our stand at the Independence Farmers' Market every Saturday through November.

One of our most popular items is proving to be our scented purification candle embedded with a full 25 carats of these wonderful little beauties. With approximately 18 hours burn time, they will diffuse the premium fragrance of your choice throughout the room without being obnoxious, overbearing or smelling fake. It is truly mesmerizing to see how the flame of the candle interacts with the crystals as the candle burns. We have over a dozen different fragrances to choose from.

To learn more about how special these gemstones are and further understand why the Oregon state legislature voted them as our official state gemstone in 1987, I invite you to watch this clip recently featured on OPB's Oregon Field Guide: https://www.opb.org/video/2022/02/17/oregon-sunstones/

Also a great write up in The Oregon Encyclopedia: https://www.oregonencyclopedia.org/articles/oregon_sunstone/ #.YlhyyDfMJPY

Due to the lack of a hard frost thus far this year, our wild mushroom season has gone on a little longer than it usually does. Here's one of our favorite ways to preserve them when we find a large amount!

Chanterelles have an aroma reminiscent of apricots. The flavor lends itself to working with curry, while not losing its mushroom appeal....
