Nam and Anna's Garden

Nam and Anna's Garden Local vegetable vendor. Visit us at the Iowa City Saturday Farmer's Market (May-October). Welcome to our Facebook!

We're a Vietnamese/Chinese/First-generation American family of 6 living on the west side of Iowa City, IA. We grow Asian vegetables that are affordable, seasonal, grown chemical-free, and fresh from our backyard. Nam also grows houseplants, flowers, and starters that are easy to care for and will brighten up your home. Anna makes sesame balls, coconut bread, almond cookies, and goodies passed down

the family tree. We vend primarily at the Iowa City Saturday Farmers Market from May-October in the summer. However, we also deliver plants, schedule pick-up, and cater food on request. Reach out to us on Messenger/Instagram or visit our stall at the local market!

Almost all of the veggies we bring to the market can be eaten fresh in salads, sandwiches, and spring rolls. But if you’re willing to put in some time and a bit of effort (just a bit)- most of our leaf greens make a fantastic soup. You just need to boil up some meat for your base. Season with salt and/or mushroom seasoning. Then once the meat is cooked, take it to a full boil, turn off the heat, and toss in your leaves. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes and enjoy. We typically have dinner with rice, a soup, a stir-fried side, and fresh greens.

Keep it simple and use just one green in your soup: malabar spinach, Philippine spinach, chard, kale, mizuna, tatsoi, sweet potato tops, chives, amaranth, red mustard, etc. One recipe, lots of options, lots of flavors. Oh so good. 🤤

Ps you don’t have to be fancy like me. Anna was making Vietnamese ham so I stole some of her meat mix for the base of my soup in these pictures. Just boiling up some plain chicken thighs or pork ribs also make a decent broth.

A week of gardening, harvested Friday evening, neatly piles into these few tote bins. July’s an exciting month. We’re starting to get some thai basil, perilla, sweet beans, chrysanthemum, jute, etc. alongside June’s collection of swiss chard, kale, and mints. We have a few bunches of green onion too. Our arugula and lettuce are growing in and will be back at market next week. I’m excited for the spinach in a couple weeks. see y’all in the morning!

Our garden is back in full majestic state! It was looking rough earlier this year but wow- dad brought it back beautifully. July brings a so many greens - we’re starting to see our vietnamese beans and hints of long beans. Sweet basil and thai basil are growing in. Some lemon balm. The tomatoes are climbing. Vietnamese perilla’s getting stronger and we’re starting to bring a few bunches of shiso and kkaennip to market each week. Malabar, new zealand, and phillippine spinach are here. And so many more! Lots of goodies growing in this month!
