EGG SALES AND SHIPPING IS ON HIATUS

most of the flock is now broody so we've been getting minimal eggs so we're on hiatus for the moment. once they break and ramp up again, i'll make another announcement.

nothing is dead until it's warm and dead. first hatch of the season working down a chick waitlist, and as per my previous post, not all broodies are good moms. this one must have hatched early this morning, and i found it literally right next to the hen that brooded the egg: cold, not moving, not even breathing. shoved it into my bra and ran into my shed to get my incubator, then ran inside--found a warmie that some friends gave me, used it in the interim while my incubator got up to temp. the recovery is nothing short of amazing.

a tale of two broodies. one is great having hatched for me last year, the other is new to the brooding scene and.... not so much. i gave them 9 eggs each because i periodically hatch to check fertility and have a local chick waitlist. the one on the right keeps them warm and snug under her--candled today and 8 are developing nicely.

then there's the one on the left... all the eggs were cool to the touch when i removed her from the nest which was my first inkling something was wrong. not a single one developed even though from just looking at her, she LOOKS like she's sitting fine. i realized because of how fluffy she is, she pushed all the eggs to her outside and hasn't been keeping them warm. she is now taken off the "good broody" list and i'll be breaking her out of it this week.

The biggest THANK YOU to Painted Feathers Homestead for always being my test ship and hatcher. They've been with me since I first started shipping bobtails and helping me test shipping and hatching methods so it's been quite a journey.

This year's test ship and hatch went through the ringer, got lost looping between two post offices, while we frantically tried to figure out how to intercept the danged thing (and now you know why I highly recommend express priority) for over a week, and 5 out of a dozen made it to lockdown despite the odds and we got the first hatch.

Here is a perfect example of why I only recommend dry incubating and hatching upright, spinning slowly at least three times a day, no water or laying down at lockdown. Shipped eggs have compromised air cells, which means the less wobbling during incubating, the better.

In a stroke of genius, they put shelf liner over the vertical holders at lockdown so the babies won't get their legs stuck. Can't wait to see what kind of bowling balls these little guys will grow into.

This year's hatching season has begun! I am currently going down the wait list of everyone who contacted me for eggs during the off season. Due to disruptions within USPS' supply chain, we highly recommend shipping via priority express medium box (11-3/4" x 8-3/4" x 5-3/4") as our fertility test batch is also a shipping test--what should have taken 3 days took almost 10. You can check shipping rates from 11751. However, if requested we can still send out medium flat rate priority. Happy spring!
