We occasionally get asked if our honey is organic. The honest answer is that no beekeeper in the continental United States can guarantee their honey is 100% organic.

In fact, when we took our very first beekeeping class at Ohio State University 12 years ago, one of the first things we were taught was that honey cannot truly be guaranteed organic because of where bees choose to forage. Honey bees typically forage within a 2–5 mile radius of their hive, covering thousands of acres. During those flights, bees visit whatever nectar and pollen sources are available, including wildflowers, gardens, crops, roadsides, and wooded areas. Because beekeepers cannot control every plant, field, or property within a bee's foraging range, it's impossible to guarantee that bees only visit organically managed plants. We only use organic-approved treatments in our beekeeping practices. However, even with those efforts, we cannot honestly label our honey as organic.

What we can guarantee is that our honey is pure, raw honey produced by our bees. We do nothing to alter it. It comes straight from the bees. We spin it, strain it and bottle it in our glass jars. We work hard to provide healthy colonies and quality honey while being transparent about how honey is produced. Sometimes the most honest answer is also the simplest one: bees don't recognize property lines, and they certainly don't read organic certification signs.

Yesterday, while pulling honey frames, I spotted a newly emerging drone. I’ve never taken the time to watch one come out before—we’re usually too busy and rushing from hive to hive. This time, I stopped and watched him fully emerge from his cell. It was a pretty neat reminder to slow down and appreciate some of the amazing things happening inside a hive every day. 🐝✨

We pulled our first few boxes of honey frames today! We’ll have fresh spring honey ready soon!

DID YOU KNOW?

🐝There are live enzymes in honey.

🐝When in contact with a metal spoon, these enzymes die.

🐝The best way to eat honey is with wooden or plastic spoon.

🐝Honey contains a substance that helps your brain work better.

🐝Honey is one of the rare foods on earth that alone can sustain human life.

🐝One teaspoon of honey is enough to sustain human life for 24 hours.

🐝Propolis that bees produce, is one of the most powerful natural antibiotics

🐝Honey has no expiration date.

🐝A bee lives less than 40 days, visits at least 1000 flowers and produces less than a teaspoon of honey in its lifetime.

🐝One of the first coins had a bee symbol on it.

I’m doing my best to be a good beekeeping assistant. Brent gave me super clear instructions on blocking the entrance with straw after he lowered this swarm down. It was a little bumpier than expected so they weren’t happy. I bailed because they started flying at my head. You can hear me panic at the end 🤣

Naturally, seeing this many bees can feel a little scary—but here’s the cool part: when bees swarm, they’re actually at their calmest. 🐝
Before leaving the hive, they fill up on honey to fuel their journey, so they’re full, content, and not interested in bothering anyone. They also have nothing to protect right now—they’re essentially “homeless” and just looking for a new place to call home—so they’re not aggressive at all.
If you happen to come across a swarm, don’t panic. They mean no harm! They’re simply taking a break on one of their many stops while house-hunting. 😊🐝

We had to discard some comb that one of the hives was building a little wonky off of one of the frames. Look at those eggs!
