We occasionally get asked if our honey is organic. The honest answer is that no beekeeper in the continental United States can guarantee their honey is 100% organic.
In fact, when we took our very first beekeeping class at Ohio State University 12 years ago, one of the first things we were taught was that honey cannot truly be guaranteed organic because of where bees choose to forage. Honey bees typically forage within a 2–5 mile radius of their hive, covering thousands of acres. During those flights, bees visit whatever nectar and pollen sources are available, including wildflowers, gardens, crops, roadsides, and wooded areas. Because beekeepers cannot control every plant, field, or property within a bee's foraging range, it's impossible to guarantee that bees only visit organically managed plants. We only use organic-approved treatments in our beekeeping practices. However, even with those efforts, we cannot honestly label our honey as organic.
What we can guarantee is that our honey is pure, raw honey produced by our bees. We do nothing to alter it. It comes straight from the bees. We spin it, strain it and bottle it in our glass jars. We work hard to provide healthy colonies and quality honey while being transparent about how honey is produced. Sometimes the most honest answer is also the simplest one: bees don't recognize property lines, and they certainly don't read organic certification signs.
