For those who missed it, a Calico or yellow-spotted lobster is an extraordinary catch with a rarity of roughly 1 in 30 million and we caught one in DownEast Maine!

It's september.. that means fishermen are experiencing a slump in their catches! So.. what are we catching? 🤣

Maybe a year or two old! This little baby lobster came up in one of our traps!

I honestly don't know how he came up since our traps are not designed to catch them this small! Yet I was loving him on his first visit to the surface! Hope to see him when he's alittle bigger!

Does v-notching work to keep Maine Lobsterfishing a sustainable fishery?

Well, we caught this mother today that looks like she's in the early stage with her eggs! She will carry these eggs for the whole year and hatch next year in June or July depending on ocean temperature! Yet, the best thing we noticed, she had an old v-notch that was slowly growing back! Meaning this wasn't her first rodeo!

Never caught this before! I'm thinking we should name him Spot. But you guy get to decide whether we release him or keep him!

A Calico or yellow-spotted lobster is an extraordinary catch with a rarity of roughly 1 in 30 million! Normal lobsters have a mix of pigments that create a dark, camouflaged greenish-brown colors. A yellow mutation stops these colors from mixing correctly, leaving a bright golden or yellow spots!

When in doubt, notch it out..

when a fisherman catches an old v-notch lobster? well.. often it's a split minute judgment.. before moving onto the next task. If a female lobster has a damaged tail, a split flipper, or a fin eaten away by a predator or damaged in a trap, a game warden cannot verify if she was originally V-notched... so us fishermen must protect ourselves and our future.
