Here we have our second summer seasonal. Alpha Bites made its return to the rotation. I settled on the name because it covers the A-B-C of microgreens (arugula, broccoli, and cabbage), so consider it the smartest addition to your fridge🤓. While it has a slightly spicier profile than some of the milder blends, it is not overpowering. It is a good way to add a bit of personality to a salad or sandwich without overcomplicating things.

We grow this because it provides a consistent, flavorful option that is easy to keep on hand. You can grab what you need for a meal and the rest stays fresh in the container.

in Ridgway remains a one-of-a-kind coffee shop that stands out for good reason. All their bagels are house-made. This one is a spinach asiago bagel and, oh my.

They use my Mosaic Mix on their sandwiches. That particular blend includes broccoli, amaranth, red cabbage, and confetti radish, which adds a significant amount of color and flavor to the ham and egg. This is like the mother of all bagel sandwiches, and the depth of flavor is impressive!

Pair it with a classic salted caramel latte (or a million other drink choices). The Creative Cup crew clearly cares about the quality of their ingredients, and that dedication makes a noticeable difference in your food.

I highly encourage you to stop in and support them. Local coffee and local food are a winning combination!

It is a bit of a bittersweet goodbye to the Spring and Original Salad Booster mixes for the year, but the changing of the seasons means it is finally time to roll out the summer rotation.

Meet The Works! This is one of our two summer seasonal releases, and it definately earns its name. It is a hearty combination of broccoli, kohlrabi, collards, turnip, purple radish, endive, spinach, and lettuce. It gives you a massive variety of flavors and textures.

I designed this one to do heavy lifting in the kitchen. It has enough character to stand alone as a salad base, but it is versatile enough to toss into pretty much anything you are eating this summer. It is also a fairly efficient way to get a wide spectrum of nutrients without having to buy eight different vegetables that you might not finish.

If you are looking to restock your fridge with something new, keep an eye out for The Works! It is currently making its way to our grocery partners across the area:

At first glance this tray looks like ordinary micro basil.

Then you notice the red one in the middle.

This tray of micro Genovese basil has been growing here for the past few weeks and will be harvested soon for several local restaurant kitchens.

Every now and then a seed from a different basil variety sneaks into the mix. Or sometimes more often than you'd expect if you're not careful.

Either way, the flavor is the same bright, aromatic basil chefs use to finish pizzas, pasta, sauces, salads and drinks. Fresh, clean, and grown close to where it will actually be used.

Watching a tray go from seed to something that finishes dishes around town never really gets old.

Some crops exist because they solve a problem.

Micro onions are one of those.

This is roughly a two week crop and will be harvested tonight for several local restaurant kitchens.

Yes, they look identical to micro leeks and yes, they are a little stronger. That does not make them better, just different. Some chefs prefer the extra onion flavor when they want something that stands up to a dish instead of disappearing into it.

For me and my own kitchen, they solve a different problem. Much of my yard is basically a swamp, and onion sets in the garden have never been particularly impressed with that situation😬. Onions around here seem to handle life in a tray a lot better.

This is just another small link between our microgreens and the local food scene.

There’s always one tray in the grow room that smells like dinner.

Right now, it’s oregano!

It was seeded a few weeks ago and will be harvested shortly. Soon it will be heading into a local restaurant kitchen before the weekend rush.

Most of us only know oregano from the little spice jar in the cabinet, but fresh oregano is brighter and tastier by comparison.

That’s the cool part of growing microgreens. The crops can shift as menus shift, and the community shifts with it.

It starts here and ends on someone's plate.

Did you know today is National Cabbage Day, not just Fat Tuesday? Who knew cabbage deserved its own holiday!

It’s a good excuse to highlight a newer fan favorite variety. Pennsylvania Superfood mix includes red cabbage microgreens, but it does not really taste like cabbage. When it is rounded out with broccoli, kale, and sweet pea shoots, it just tastes green and fresh.

One of the things I like to point out with microgreens is the convenience and the lack of waste. I am famous for buying a head of red cabbage with the best intentions and then watching it sit in the fridge until it goes bad. This way, you still get the sulforaphane from the broccoli, vitamins C and K, and antioxidants from the rest, without the waste. Pretty neato!

So the best way to celebrate National Cabbage Day, and our renewed motivation to eat better and waste less, is to visit your local independent grocer:

Happy National Pizza Day! Upon learning that this is a thing, my immediate thought was to highlight local pizza joints that top their pizza with our microgreens.

First photo: The Sons of Little Italy in Ridgway just started getting our micro basil for their pizzas. Let's just say it was an offer they couldn't refuse.

They then made ME an offer on their Di Cherbo pizza. Let's just say it was an offer I couldn't refuse. The pizza was bellissima. 5/5.

Second photo: Meanwhile, Pizza Napoli & Restaurant in Bradford has been using micro basil for the better part of a year now. Hands down the best pizza experience in the Bradford area. Their rotating specialty pizzas are creative and delicious.

Local pizza and local ingredients. Everybody wins on National Pizza Day!
