See something you don’t recognize? Ask the farmer.

City Market tables are filled with vegetables, herbs, and varieties you may not find in a typical grocery store—and the person selling them can often tell you exactly how they taste, how to choose them, and the best way to cook them.

Even when farmers and shoppers don’t share the same language, they find ways to communicate—through photos, pointing and gesturing, demonstrations, and translation apps.

That exchange is part of the farmers market experience. It can turn an unfamiliar vegetable into a new favorite and help you understand more about the food grown for our community.

The Farmers Market is perfect for trying something new.

These tiny striped eggplants are just one of the interesting finds waiting at City Market. They’re mild, versatile, and a great excuse to ask the farmer who grew them for a favorite way to prepare them.

Shopping the Farmers Market gives you the chance to discover produce you may not find at the grocery store—and to get cooking advice straight from the source.

What new market find have you tried lately?

Knowing your farmer starts long before market day. Farmers Market Manager Paula Stocker travels thousands of miles each year visiting farms, walking fields, and learning firsthand how our vendors grow the food they bring to City Market. Here she is on a farm visit with longtime grower, Adam Jones.

These visits help us build strong relationships with farmers—and help you shop with confidence. Because knowing where your food comes from matters. Happy National Farmers Market Week!

The best thing you'll take home from a farmers market might not fit in your shopping bag.

One of the joys of shopping at City Market is getting to know the people behind your food. Ask what's in season. Find out how it's grown. Learn the best way to cook it. You might discover a new favorite vegetable—or hear a story you'll remember long after dinner is over.

That's something you simply can't get from a barcode.

This National Farmers Market Week, take a few extra minutes to meet the people who make our Farmers Market possible.

❤️ The freshest food comes with a conversation.

Since 1857. Still Gathering.

Today marks the official start of National Farmers Market Week, and we’re celebrating a tradition that’s been bringing Kansas Citians together for more than 170 years.

This photograph captures an early chapter in City Market’s story. While the wagons, clothing and skyline have changed over the decades, the reason people come here hasn’t.

To buy fresh food directly from the people who produce it. To support local businesses. To catch up with neighbors. To experience the energy of community.

Generations have gathered here—and every market day, that tradition continues.

Happy National Farmers Market Week from Kansas City’s original public market. ❤️

🍉 Fresh Idea 💡 from the Farmers Market:
Melon, Jalapeño & Mint Salad

Flores Farms has beautiful cantaloupe and seeded watermelons in both red and yellow varieties this weekend. Pair them with fresh mint and spicy peppers from Star Lucky 18 Farm for an easy summer salad that’s as refreshing as it is beautiful:

Cube chilled cantaloupe and/or watermelon, toss with torn fresh mint and a squeeze of lime, drizzle lightly with olive oil and balsamic glaze. Then grate a frozen jalapeño over the top and add a pinch of flaky salt.

Simple ingredients. Big summer flavor. 🌿🍉
