Farm Friday Update #4
Things move fast around here and sometimes it's Saturday Sunrise chores by the time you realize it's farm update Friday. I didn't take a single picture on the farm this week in the chaos but I accomplished almost all my priority tasks and a few bonus points on the board. And I may have forgotten to have a little fun but the yellow sparkley pen always brightens my day!

Seed starting station is up and running! Seed starts are started, fall garden incoming. Chickens are getting big and ugly. Something about the teenage phase of a hen really rubs my caveman brain the wrong way, they're practically dinosaurs. It's not right. We brush cut the will-be courtyard/processing station. Our Electric fence isn't quite charged at the moment and the cows drank my de-chlorinated water I had for the indigenous microorganism soil treatment. So that slipped through our fingers this week. Just a good reminder to fix the fence before seedlings pop.

Friday Farm Update #3
We workin. It's hot. Keep moving forward.

I can't get enough electrolytes this week! We make it easier on ourselves where we can. As first generation farmers we don't have a lot of equipment or and heavy equipment isn't ideal for living soil. So we get creative. This little wagon transport was a gamechanger this week and I can't wait to put it to use more. Even Ghost, the tractor, was excited about this arrangement

Mulch never came so if any local tree folks are reading this, I have a spot you can regularly drop loads of clean wood chips 😁 After laying 20 ft of our main path my woodchip pile is dwindling fast. Only 1180 more feet of path to lay 😅🫠 we will do it little by little every week. How do you eat an elephant?

We have been diligently working to setup our gourmet mushroom grow setup. After getting everything up and running and our first harvest, an email from our Commercial grow bag supplier let us know he is closing shop. That was disappointing, but it just means we will make our own. Thats next week along with Fall Season seed starts, soil innoculation, and seeing if we can squeeze pumpkins in before Halloween

Friday Farm Update #2

Farm Fresh Eggs anyone? We know you want them and we do too! So we are growing out our first batch of chickens.

This week the brooder made its way to the farm, the birds, almost fully feathered moved outside! They couldn't be happier.

We seem to have gotten a surprise Guinea in the mix so we are very excited for her to get to work tracking down every last tick.

Unfortunately one of the pains of this property has been the tick population. The chickens, but especially the guinea should love them! Ginny the Guinea turning ticks into fertilizer, one day at a time.

More mulch is on its way, I'm going to swing on down to Costco to see if I can find some large flat cardboard for the paths. Time to make friends with Costco employees! Were going to be laying a LOT of mulch. Hit me up if you have the hookup

Friday Farm Update #1

Lots has changed around here these last couple months and we have news to share. We are MOVING! Don't worry though we will still be right here in Kaufman County working towards our goal of feeding local folks local food. This time, closer to Terrell just 3 miles from I-20 on Highway 34.

We are moving to a more centeralized location with easier access and significantly more room to grow. I'll be sharing our progress as we transition this acre of raw land into a productive market farm. This will be a journey taken WITHOUT harmful sprays or unnatural pesticides.

This week we got our posts for electric fencing placed, insulators installed, and hotwire run.

We got chickens.. As every homesteader knows if you come across a crazy deal on chickens you gotta get chickens! Its basic chicken math, and we're not trying to lose money over here! SO.....We got 26 chickens. Look out for a chicken tractor build in the next few weeks!

And finally the Lawn Tractor that haunts my nightmares is back up and running! Belt>replaced, spring>didn't fit, brush for plot #1 is CUT (mostly). He is up and running! He cut the paths and plot this week. With Angel's help of course. Thinking about naming the would be tractor, Ghost. Let us know if you think it fits him. Thats it for me, Stay Rad!

The thing we are most excited about every year is CHERRY TOMATOS. My impatient excitement for thess Cosmic Purple Cherry tomatos is building! They came in a little slow but are off to the races now! Cant wait!
