Adaptations has been growing and supplying locally gr

own, organic produce to chefs, families and retailers since 1984. and have been involved in cultivating sustainable food systems both as homesteaders and in their development of a distribution center for local growers. Tane has worked with many organizations, including being a founding member of Hawaii Organic Farmers Association, a contributor to the Organic Materials Review Institute, Independent Organic Inspectors Association and Oregon Tilth. Maureen worked in California as assistant to the president of Wildwood Natural Foods, learning skills that served her and Tane in growing Adaptations from a company of three growers and half a dozen accounts in 1990 to the current scale of over 100 growers and 65 accounts on five islands today. Adaptations can supply certified organic produce that meets USDA regulations to resorts, restaurants and retail outlets. The marketing and distribution business connects growers of all scales with consumers of all scales. On its farm, Adaptations uses ecological, certified organic practices. Adaptations Farm hosts select volunteers who apply for a position through “World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms (www.wwoof.org).”

Tane and Maureen began raising herbs and lettuce for Peter Merriman, founder of the Hawaii Regional Cuisine group, when he was at the Mauna Lani, before he opened his restaurant in Waimea. He invited them to share their knowledge with the Hawaii Regional Cuisine Chefs so that they could better understand how to work with the local community of farmers in order to get what they needed. They attended the first three meetings of the HRC group, advising them and learning from them how to produce locally what was previously only being imported. Since then, they have increased productivity on their 7.5 acre certified organic farm in Honaunau where they grow micro mix, edible flowers, herbs, salad, avocados and medicinal plants. Their home and production areas are “off the grid” and solar powered. Onsite composting systems use earthworms to recycle the soil. They have developed infrastructure that includes local gardeners and farmers, industrial scale salad processing equipment, refrigerated chill room, ripening racks for avocados, fruit and tomatoes, delivery vans and an excellent skilled and committed staff. Adaptations helps with both the production and consumption of local, sustainably produced crops. Sustainability includes health, energy, education, and job creation. Sustainable business is based on personal relationships and high quality production. This approach has been termed “artisanal”, as opposed to “industrial”. The product is “something special” as opposed to “low cost”. Encouraging local, sustainable food sources supports the ‘slow food’ movement; we now have a flourishing subscription service for families on the Big Island, supplying the freshest greens, vegetables and fruit. Adaptations’ approach requires a skilled and conscientious work force. Decision-making is based on workers having knowledge and being able to work together toward agreed upon specifications. The employees of Adaptations have extensive experience in tropical agriculture and a personal commitment to excellence in their positions. Adaptations’ dedication is intended to support Hawaii’s products and the families who produce them. 100% of the produce we distribute is grown on the Big Island.

Celebrating our circular economy and other news

Mahalo for your continued support of our farmer and food producer ohana. Our community is rich in abundance and care for each other. Together, we support a robust and real circular economy that is a model for all regions. Truly, what could be more meaningful that our island’s ability to feed itself?

~Your financial impact on local farmers~
Since January first, 183 of Hawaii’s farmers and food producers earned a little over $700,000.00 so far this year because of your Fresh Feast CSA membership and wholesale customer demand. This represents 343 different items that moved from farms and kitchens to consumers through our food hub in the first half of 2025.

~Free local produce boxes for our community~
Adaptations Food Hub recently completed a 100% locally sourced feeding program called Umeke ‘Ai Pono through a contract between the Hawaii Department of Education and the Hawaii Food Hub Hui. HDOE received the funds for this program from the Local Food Purchasing Agreement, a USDA AMS program that has since been discontinued. Adaptations distributed 1321 boxes filled with local food from about 25 different farmers and food producers provided to South Kona households experiencing food insecurity including 4544 individuals in cooperation with Honaunau Elementary School. We wish to malama Trish Papalima and her team at the school who managed giving the boxes away to families picking up students mostly in pre-school and after school programs. Adaptations is a founding member of the HFHH comprised of 14 food hubs across our state whose mission is to collaborate and strengthen our market power to increase equity for food producers and improve access to healthy locally grown food.

~Maureen went to Washington DC~
As State Secretary of Hawaii Farmers Union, I had the privilege of representing Hawaii’s family farmers in meetings with USDA, Department of Justice Anti-Trust Division and one on one with our Representatives and Senators and their senior policy staff. Among many impressions, I was struck by Hawaii’s leadership role in developing a regional food system that is a model for regions across America. Maybe because we malama each other and hold the spirit of aloha close, we are successfully building short value chains that provide locally produced food to our residents and visitors. Shorter distances and time mean greater awareness of quality along the way, denser nutritional value and a greater percentage of return to the producers. Less handling means greater freshness!

"With a statewide regional kitchen master plan now in motion, the Hawai‘i Department of Education (HIDOE) is turning its attention to transforming school menus to feature more locally grown and produced foods.

Building on the momentum of the Department’s regional kitchen model — launched earlier this year to modernize school food production and strengthen Hawaiʻi’s agricultural economy — this next phase centers on menu redevelopment and cafeteria staff training to deliver fresh, nutritious and culturally relevant meals that appeal to students.
HIDOE advances efforts to cut food imports, boost local purchasing.

“Our students deserve meals that fuel their learning and reflect the flavors of Hawai‘i,” Superintendent Keith Hayashi said. “This partnership is about reimagining school food to better serve our students while also strengthening our communities. We’re proud to be building a model that connects education, agriculture, and health in a meaningful way.”

First Lady Jaime Kanani Green added: “School meals are a proven way to address food insecurity for our keiki. Using more local foods to create nutritious meals is a win for our keiki, our farmers, and our economy.”
