So why hasn’t the price of beef in your grocery cart dropped right along with them?

Because the price a rancher gets for a live animal and the price you pay for a package of beef are NOT the same market.

Between the ranch and the grocery store are processors, packers, distributors and retailers—all with their own costs and margins.

That means cattle prices can fall FAST while grocery prices barely move.

Most families never get to see this side of the beef business.

This sounds scary. So let’s talk about what it ACTUALLY means.

The first U.S. horse case of New World screwworm in this outbreak has been confirmed in Texas.

In plain rancher terms?

Screwworm flies lay eggs in wounds. The larvae can then feed on living tissue.

That’s why ranchers CHECK animals.

Cuts. Scrapes. Fly problems. Something just not looking right.

This does NOT mean American beef suddenly isn’t safe.

But it DOES mean animal health matters and what happens on a ranch long before your beef reaches the freezer matters too.

I’m running to the locker to pick up pork & lamb.

We have a horse to deliver this afternoon.

And rodeo finals this weekend with a friend.

Meanwhile, somewhere in there I’m supposed to work, feed everybody and apparently locate the dry ice hammer I may have shipped to a customer. 😂

This is where words on labels can get confusing FAST.
Grassfed.
Grass-finished.
Pasture-raised.

They sound like they should all mean the same thing.

They don’t.

Our cattle are 100% grassfed AND grass-finished.

Grass isn’t something they eat for part of their lives.

It’s their diet.

If that’s important to your family, don’t stop at the front of the package.

Our cattle spend their lives on pasture.

We move them. We check them. We watch the grass. We watch the weather. We make decisions every day based on what they and the land need.

That’s why “Where was it raised?” is worth asking.

We know their mothers. We know the pastures they were born in. We know how they were cared for from their very first day.

My favorite

This is RanchLife.

Most of it isn’t very exciting.

Feed something.
Check something.
Move something.
Fix something.
Then realize something else needs fed. 😂

But somewhere in all those ordinary little moments, we’re caring for the land, caring for our animals and raising food for families.

And I can’t think of anything I’d rather be doing.
