~LONG POST ALERT~ It's catch up time! We have been so busy with just plain Ole life stuff that I haven't had the chance to update about all the Dahlia News! I will try to break it down and explain the past few months up until now.
~In Feb we dug up around 150 existing Tubers that we left in the ground over the winter. Because we had a warmer winter we thought the Tubers would be ok....we were wrong! We lost over half of our existing crop. I was sad, devastated and lost some of my favorites! We lost them due to Rot as we had a really "wet" winter and Tubers do not like to sit in water. I will never leave them in the ground again to winter over....Will always dig them up and store them in a cool dry place....expensive lesson learned!
~The good news is that we had already planned to expand our crop with new varieties, so during the off season I had roughly ordered over 300 new Dahlia Tubers to be sent to me in the early Spring to be planted for this year!❤️
~When the time comes for planting....this is a organizational nightmare! We expanded our crop in order to start selling our Tubers next year. ( Tubers multiply under ground during the growing season, and can then be sold to someone who wants that particular variety.) So when you go to plant your tubers....you must keep track of the name of the Tuber and what hole you place that said tuber in. Imagine trying to keep track of 500 Tubers, each of their name, creating a name tag for each tuber ( Dahlia) and then creating a map just as a back up in case something goes wrong, so that when the time comes to dig up all those Tubers to separate and sell, you know for sure which one you have and know for certain that you are sending the correct tuber to the customer who bought said tuber. Welcome to the world of Selling Dahlia Tubers!!!!
~The following pictures are from the start of unpacking the Tubers that already had sprouts and ready to be planted, to being planted to the chaos we have now. We have mixed in a few veggies and have seen a few blooms already....although the majority of the 500 dahlias will definitely be in full bloom in the next three to four weeks. That is when I will flood this page with all the beautiful Dahlia pictures!!
~It's a Ton of work....Brian and I are usually out there every night watering and weeding although there will always be weeds. Brian also just cleared another area for some Blueberry plants for next year....so that will look pretty next year....right now it's dirt and stumps. Lol
~Some have asked about Photo Ops....If you would like to take some photos of your kids or Family Photos this year in the Dahlias....please reach out to me in a private message and we can work something out....I'm pretty easy!
~Also, some have asked about Bouquets??? I have thought of offering a weekly or Bi-weekly Bouquet Subscription type offering...You know...A Big, Fresh, Dahlia Bouquet every week or every other week!! I haven't worked out all the deets but of course it would be a Awesome deal....if this is something you may be interested in....please leave me a comment...if enough are interested, I will definitely run with it! More bloom pictures to come....Happy, Happy Summer Everyone....Enjoy it while it's HERE!!!🌼🌸🌞
