The season is not happening yet for fresh huckleberries. You can go to Huckleberry Hunting & Recipes to keep an eye on where they are coming in and for some delicious recipes.
Once Oregon starts, we will have them. It is looking to be a scarce season, good thing we have plenty of frozen huckleberries!

Two dark-berried plants are filling out along the same fence lines right now, and by the end of summer their clusters will look like the same prize. One cooks down into syrup and jam. The other sends children and curious foragers to poison control.

Elderberry is the woody shrub behind elderflower cordial and dark berry syrup. Pokew**d is the soft, magenta-stemmed w**d whose berries are toxic. Birds eat poke berries all day without trouble — people can't.

🌿 Three differences, three seconds:
- The stem — elderberry is woody, gray-brown, bumpy with raised dots. Pokew**d is smooth and bright magenta-pink, soft enough to snap.
- The cluster — elderberry berries sit in flat, umbrella-shaped heads. Pokew**d berries hang in long drooping chains, grape-style, on pink stalks.
- The leaf — elderberry leaves are compound, several toothed leaflets to a stem. Pokew**d leaves are single and smooth-edged.

🐾 Learn the stem now and the rest falls into place before the berries even ripen. Even true elderberry needs cooking — the raw berries, leaves, and stems aren't kind to your stomach until they're simmered and strained. Wear gloves if you pull pokew**d, since the root holds the most.

Bright pink stem, hanging chains — leave those for the birds 🌿
