We are a small, local salmon and crab fishing operation selling to businesses and directly to customers. Operating out of LaConner, WA, we provide locally caught Dungeness crab during posted open seasons as well as fresh salmon sourced from the local, surrounding waters. What is a #2 salmon? Regardless of the salmon species, a #2 is a salmon on its return to spawn that has stopped feeding. From then forward, it lives off the stored fat it has accumulated up until then. As the salmon burns that fat, their skin darkens, going from the chrome color of a #1 to a slight bronzing, and eventually into a creamish brown color. Their flesh, which had been the orangish, pink color desired in a #1 begins to fade out into a lighter pink color. Many people refer to #2's as "smokers," a fish that would be smoked to add flavor, but not necessarily a fish desired for baking or for the bbq. As each season progresses, the #2 count increases. Currently, the larger portion of Chinook are #1's, but there are an increasing amount of available #2's. Are you interested in a "smoker" Chinook? If so, let me know. What is the life-cycle of the fish you are buying from us? Many of our salmon start as fish eggs in a tray as many of our runs are hatchery supported. The young fry becomes a young smolt in a hatchery pond and in the river system and its estuaries before they eventually reach the saltwater bays. They have mixed with wild stock salmon in the streams and they all head off to their rearing areas, commonly the Gulf of Alaska and surrounding waters. There, hatchery and wild salmon do the same things, avoid predators and eat. At their respective times, 2 to 4 years depending on the species, they return to their release location or wild stream location and attempt to lay and fertilize their eggs so the cycle can begin again.

Sometimes you just have to admit mother nature rules - not your desire to catch fish. It continues to blow and it is making the net too tight. A tight net does not catch fish. So, a couple hours of sleep are in order, but the wind is loud. Note: Being out in such weather is not recommended for most. My boat has experience in adverse weather having been tested over and over and maintained for such weather. Additionally, we carry shelters on the boat and the necessary safety gear to withstand such a storm. ** This is more of an audio file **

Well folks, it is the calm before the storm that is supposed to move in tonight. We are fishing as long as conditions allow. We can see rain to the south of us, rain between the islands to the north, but so far, we are dry. Lets hope the fishing is worth what is predicted to come at 2am.

The predicted 5 knot wind was a 20 knot reality. It is harder to fish in heavy wind as the boat acts like a sail, pulls to hard on the net, and fish, in the stretched net, can pop right through. We lost several, but overall, did okay on our windy set.

We are catching a few fish today. How do we take care of our fish? Hot or cold day, it doesn't matter. The process is to remove the salmon from the net, gill bleed it for a short bit in a bleeder box (a cooler with water in it) and then the salmon are placed in slush ice to keep them around 34 degrees.
