Ladera Farmers Market

Ladera Farmers Market We're a small pop-up market for the community of Ladera Heights.

We feature local makers and farmers who want to share their bounty with our neighbors. 20% of all transactions go to the Ladera Heights Civic Association for use on community programs.

It's been a long while since we've posted, but we wanted to share the very sad news that our dear friend, John McWhirter, has passed away.

Anyone who participated in our Farmers Markets or our Drive-In enjoyed the fruits of his labor. He was a lifelong Laderan who deeply loved our community. He was a kind, smart, gentle soul who helped in every way he could from loading boxes, to packing orders, to helping me make the Ladera Drive-In come to life, and showing up month after month for our community clean-ups.

We lost a great friend and an even better man this week. Rest in Peace, John, and thank you for everything you gave to Ladera Heights.

Two Break-ins in Two Months

Hi everyone, as we're planning our next move for the Ladera Farmers Market, something happened that could use your help.

Like many local businesses, our friends at Sunday Gravy have had some serious challenges staying in business during the pandemic. Unfortunately, for the second time in as many months, they've been broken into. Although they keep no money in the restaurant overnight, most recently, their cash register and computer were stolen along with replacing windows again. If you're still thinking about what's for dinner tonight, consider giving your business to our friends at Sunday Gravy. Please order online since they don't currently have a cash register or computer to take orders.

Ladera Farmers Market Update: Stay tuned. We hope to have an update later this month. In the meantime, consider joining our weekly farm box program (https://www.laderaheights.org/csa) .

Would your organization be interested in helping to operate The Ladera Farmers Market?

The Ladera Farmers Market started back in May when it was becoming evident that a normal trip to the supermarket wasn't going to be happening anytime soon. What happened next was a beautiful alignment of supply and demand between local makers and our community. Each week, new vendors were added brin...

Last Call

Eighteen weeks ago, the lines at grocery stores were long and it was unknown how contagious or deadly the virus was going to be. We had the idea to quickly find a way for our neighbors to purchase healthy produce without the risk of exposure to large crowds. Also important was to create a system that would give back to those in our community who need a hand.

We've been so fortunate to get to know so many of our neighbors and immensely grateful to our volunteers who show up week after week, John and Lisa. We couldn't have gotten this far without you. Our minds are blown each week by all of the creators we've worked with over the last few months. Not to mention the hundreds and hundreds of pounds of fresh food we've been able to give to those less fortunate.

That said, as our community's COVID-19 numbers have finally leveled off and healthy and delicious foods have once again become readily available, we feel this is a good time for us to take a breather.

As you know, we've had a hard time finding a permanent and visible location with volunteers to help us run the market. Additionally, our farm has been unable to deliver on weekends, making this very difficult with our day jobs to coordinate with buyers and sellers.

Once we catch our breath and can find a location welcoming us with open arms, we'll be back. Stay tuned, Ladera. in the meantime, place one more order this week and stock up for the coming weeks! We'll see you again soon.

Just got an update from our farm regarding this week's boxes:

Unfortunately, smoke has rolled in heavily on our Petaluma farm and our limited water access up there has made it difficult to grow as much food as we have been able to in years past. So, we cut our weekly harvest down to one day this week and are working on a game plan on how to sustain ourselves for the months to come.

One tiny miracle: we were excited to get a tiny bit of rain at the Thermal farm yesterday to welcome our freshly-sewn carrots into the ground. Perhaps a sign of hope on the horizon!

In this week's boxes:

We are including carrots from our Petaluma farm. Boxes will also include Comanche Creek's frying peppers and cherry tomatoes, Dosner Organics mint and basil, and Rainbow Ranch's tangerines! We are also including organic escarole, zucchini, Romanesco, fennel, spinach, and green kale.

We are looking forward to the day when our Thermal fields open back up and the winter rains come in so we can return to growing all the food featured in our Farm Boxes. We've planned our season ahead with the contents of our Farm Boxes in mind, and we are genuinely so excited about this next chapter for our farm. In the meantime, we want to acknowledge and express our gratitude for the farmers we have been working with, and who will continue to provide food for our summer Farm Boxes. And thank YOU for supporting us with your purchases and praises.
