As farmers and ranchers, we are faced with many difficult decisions.
One that isn’t often talked about is how to handle poor‑doing calves. They are, after all, still animals deserving of care.
When a calf is born with assistance but no complications, yet fails to stand within hours, we start looking for answers. In this case, we found his left hind leg was seemingly atrophied, with no clear cause. Because he couldn’t stand, he couldn’t nurse, so we had to feed him ourselves. With the discomfort he was experiencing, he didn’t want to nurse at all. Several days passed with little to no improvement, despite therapy—such as helping him stand with a bale—and regular feedings.
Our options become either to continue this routine twice a day, hoping for a miracle that he gains strength and grows, or to humanely euthanize him due to the low likelihood of thriving—while also accepting the loss of what could amount to hundreds or even thousands of dollars.
This is the level of care we strive to provide for all of our animals, and it makes us all the more thankful when a cow and calf can successfully pair up and thrive together.
So when you pay for high‑quality beef, remember that you are also paying for the quality of care behind it.

When asked what he wanted for his birthday supper Alec answered “BBQ Beef sandwiches”
Done.
Rump roast in the crock pot on low for several hours. Drained off the liquid. Shredded it with favorite BBQ sauce.
Boom.

Shout out to Cahoy’s for the amazing buns! It makes for a harmonious combo! 😄🥩🍔
