🍁 When Will Fall Colors Peak Where You Live? 🍂

One of autumn’s biggest questions has arrived: When will the leaves reach peak color?

Our map shows the typical timing of peak fall foliage across the United States, from the earliest color in northern New England and higher elevations to the later displays across the South.

Of course, Mother Nature doesn’t follow a perfect calendar. 🍁 Elevation, rainfall, drought, temperature, wind, and local tree species can all push peak color earlier—or later—from year to year.

Take a look at the map and tell us: Where do you live, and are you seeing any fall color yet?

Most people know the name Johnny Appleseed as a folk tale before they ever learn the man was real. 🍎 John Chapman was a real nurseryman who spent decades walking ahead of settlers across Ohio and Indiana, planting apple orchards that would be ready and bearing fruit by the time families arrived to claim the land. He wasn't planting for pie, either. In the early 1800s, apples grown from seed (not grafted) were mostly too sour and bitter to eat fresh, so most of Chapman's trees existed for one practical reason: c***r.

Chapman spent his final years in the Fort Wayne area, and when he died in March 1845, he was buried on a bluff above the St. Joseph River. Today that spot sits inside Johnny Appleseed Park, marked with a simple grave and still shaded by apple trees descended from the ones he loved. Every September, the city holds the Johnny Appleseed Festival there, drawing crowds who come for the crafts and the reenactors, but plenty of them still make the quiet walk over to stand at the grave itself.

There's something fitting about a man remembered mostly as a myth having a very real, very findable resting place. No stew pot, no barefoot legend required, just a grave marker under old trees in a city park, and a story about patience that's still bearing fruit almost two centuries later. 🌳
