💡 How Much Do You Really Need to Start Selling on Amazon FBA?

This is a question I get almost every week:
👉 “How much money do I need to launch my Amazon business?"

The answer depends on the model you choose. There are two main ways most sellers start:

1. Private Label (PL) – launching your own branded product
2. Wholesale (WS) – reselling existing brand-name products

Let me break it down in simple numbers 👇

🔹 Private Label (PL) – Build Your Own Brand

This is where you create your own brand, design packaging, and control the listing. Long-term, this is how sellers make the “big exit” (selling their brand for 6–7 figures).

But it’s not cheap. From my experience, you need at least $15K–$20K to get started, and another $10K+ in reserve to reorder and run ads if you want to stay competitive.

➡️ Example:

Product sells at $30
After costs, fees, and ads, you make around $8 profit per unit (≈27%)
Selling 15 units/day = about $3,600/month profit

The catch? It usually takes 12–15 months before you break even, because Amazon requires consistent ads, reviews, and stock to compete.

🔹 Wholesale (WS) – Resell Existing Brands

This model is easier for beginners. Instead of creating a brand, you buy products from distributors/brands and sell them on Amazon.

Here you can realistically start with $3K–$5K, and keep an extra $5K–$10K to scale faster.

➡️ Example:

Product sells at $30
After costs, you make about $3 profit per unit (≈12–15%)
Selling 10 units/day = about $900/month profit

The good part? You can start seeing cash flow in 3–6 months, much faster than PL.

⚖️ Which One Is Right for You?

If you want faster, safer cash flow → Start with Wholesale ($3K–$5K)

If you want to build a long-term brand you can sell later → Go Private Label ($15K–$20K)

Both work. The difference is your budget, patience, and long-term goal.

It was a regular Tuesday morning when a seller sat staring at the Amazon Seller Central dashboard.

Sales had flatlined. ACOS was erratic. The product was good. Reviews were solid.

So, why wasn’t it scaling?

That’s when a PPC consultant which is me asked one powerful question:

“Are you using Defensive Campaigns?”

The seller paused. “Defensive… what?”

🔍 Here’s what happened next:

I explained:

> "You're losing sales on your own brand name. Competitors are bidding on it. Anyone searching for YOUR brand ends up clicking on theirs. You need to protect your territory."

Let’s Clear It Up ✅

Amazon gives you a score from 0 to 1,000 to show how healthy your account is – but don’t panic if it’s not perfect.

Here are a few common myths cleared up:

1️⃣ “I need a perfect 1,000 AHR to stay safe.”
Nope. As long as you’re above 200, your account is considered in good standing. Just make sure any policy issues are sorted quickly – especially anything marked as high or critical.

2️⃣ “If I delete the listing with the violation, the issue disappears.”
Not true. Deleting the listing doesn’t fix the violation. You still need to resolve it through the Account Health dashboard to get your score back up.

3️⃣ “My AHR will drop if I get fewer orders.”
Your score might shift slightly, but it won’t fall below 200 unless there are unresolved policy violations. So it’s less about sales volume and more about playing by the rules.

👉 Key tip: Stay on top of your Account Health tab – and act fast if something’s flagged. It can literally save your account.
