The 1980 BMW M1 was powered by the legendary 3.5-liter M88/1 inline-six engine, a masterpiece of German engineering that defined BMW’s motorsport heritage. Derived from BMW’s Formula 2 racing program, this DOHC 24-valve powerplant featured mechanical Kugelfischer-Bosch fuel injection, dry-sump lubrication, and individual throttle bodies — a combination designed for both endurance and precision.

In road-going trim, the M88/1 engine produced 277 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 243 lb-ft of torque at 5,000 rpm, sending power to the rear wheels through a 5-speed ZF manual gearbox. Built for balance and responsiveness, the engine sat mid-mounted in the M1’s tubular steel frame, contributing to its near-perfect weight distribution. The same engine architecture later evolved into the M88/3 used in the BMW M635CSi and E28 M5, cementing its legacy as one of BMW’s most iconic straight-sixes.

The 2015 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350R was powered by one of the most remarkable naturally aspirated engines ever built by Ford — the 5.2-liter “Voodoo” V8. This high-revving flat-plane crankshaft engine was a major departure from traditional American V8s, designed for maximum performance and precision.

Producing 526 horsepower at 7,500 rpm and 429 lb-ft of torque, the Voodoo V8 could spin to an astonishing 8,250 rpm redline, delivering an unmistakable exhaust note similar to exotic European supercars. Its lightweight forged internals, plasma-transferred wire arc cylinder liners, and individual throttle bodies ensured responsiveness and durability under extreme track conditions.

The engine was hand-built at Ford’s Romeo Engine Plant and paired exclusively with a Tremec TR-3160 six-speed manual transmission, emphasizing pure driver engagement. The GT350R’s Voodoo V8 remains a legend among enthusiasts — a symbol of Ford’s engineering daring and commitment to high-performance innovation.

The 1994 Rolls-Royce Corniche was powered by a 6.75-liter (6,750cc) V8 engine, one of the most refined and enduring powerplants in British automotive history. This all-aluminum pushrod V8, originally developed in the 1950s, was continuously updated for smoother performance and improved reliability.

By 1994, the Corniche’s engine featured Bosch MK-Motronic fuel injection and a Garrett turbocharger, delivering around 325 horsepower with immense torque for effortless acceleration. The powertrain was paired with a 4-speed GM 4L80E automatic transmission, ensuring seamless shifts and quiet cruising.

Hand-built at the Crewe factory, each engine underwent meticulous inspection and tuning, embodying Rolls-Royce’s philosophy: “At 100 mph, it should feel as smooth as at 30.” The engine’s near-silent operation and turbine-like smoothness became symbols of ultimate luxury and craftsmanship.
