It’s been a while since the last update so this is a big one. The growing season is in full swing and I attached a video of our insect monitoring and control for oriental fruit moth. This is one of the biggest pests in the orchard alongside plum curculio and apple maggot.

Crop thinning is nearly finished for the year with a couple varieties remaining. Sadly the cold snap we had in March did a number on this years crop of apples and peaches.

We will have a small crop of peaches in July so stay tuned and we will post when they are ready to pick.

The apple crop is also very small with Jonafree and Rome apples the only varieties producing much this year. I anticipate we will be open for a short time in mid to late August and early September for these varieties.

We will have a crop of blackberries for appointment picking in June and July.

I will continue to post updates during the growing season with an upcoming video discussing growing degree days and how this correlates with pest management.

On a final note we are renting the orchard building for events throughout the year so if you are looking for a special place for your party please feel to reach out!!

Spring is here, well sort of, the weather has been up and down to say the least. I have decided to post more during the growing season in order to allow more access to our growing practices. This initial post includes several videos discussing application of bordeaux spray as well as placement of insect monitoring traps.

In a follow-up to the videos, currently our peach trees are either in full bloom for the Flamin Fury Jumbo and calyx pink for the Redhaven Peaches. With the cold weather over the next several days I anticipate the majority of our peach crop will be lost for the season.

On another note we do have a batch of apple trees arriving in a couple of weeks time and will also be top grafting our Lodi apple trees. If anyone is interested in helping with either grafting the trees or helping to plant new trees in the orchard we appreciate it!

Last minute reminder! Our pruning workshop is tomorrow February 28th from 10 am to 1 pm.

Please feel free to message us or call/text 816-262-8613 if you are interested in attending.

The cost is $10 per person and will cover pruning apple and peach trees as well as blackberries.

For anyone interested we will be open for a short period tomorrow 11/8 from 11 am to 1 pm. We still have some goldrush apples available and will be giving them away to those who would like some.

Please bring your own bags or boxes and there will be no charge for the apples. The apples do have quite a lot of sooty blotch and flyspeck on them at this time but it does not effect the taste or shelf life of the apples. These will store for several months in refrigeration and are great for baking and eating.

Also I would encourage anyone coming to wear pants and shoes as the grass is taller and there are foraging bees on the fallen fruit.

Thanks for everyone who came out to support of our orchard this year, we appreciate the business and it was great seeing many familiar faces!

We have closed for public picking for the year and will reopen in June once blackberries are again in season.

For this winter we are again offering pruning and grating classes. Prices and dates have not yet been set but will be similar to when these were last offered. If you are interested please reach out!

Today, Sunday October 12th, will be our final day for picking, and we are open from 10 am to 5 pm.

We have Goldrush apples remaining for picking priced at $1.50 per pound. They are a great all purpose apple and store for many months in refrigeration.

Donuts and slushies will also be available and as always there is no fee to come and pick and no appointments are necessary.

We are open this weekend for apple picking on the following days and hours;

Saturday October 11th from 10 am to 5 pm
Sunday October 12th from 10 am to 5 pm

We do have apples remaining for picking for these days as we had anticipated running out last weekend but do have plenty of Goldrush apples left to pick. Other varieties have mostly been picked out.

Picking for this week includes the following apples;

Goldrush $1.50/lb - a very crunchy and very sweet apple with a golden hue. This apple is also mildly tart and is a great keeper storing 8+ months in cold storage. It is great for baking, fresh eating, or cider

Donuts and slushies will also be available and as always there is no fee to come and pick and no appointments are necessary.

This will be our final full weekend, if apples remain for picking following this weekend we will open on a Saturday later in the month as the goldrush apples will continue to ripen until a hard freeze.

We are open today Sunday October 5th from 10 am to 5 pm. No appointments necessary and no entrance fee.

We are nearing the end of our season but have apples remaining for picking at $1.50 per pound.

Also available today is homemade sourdough bread, fresh apple or pumpkin donuts, and slushies!

We anticipate this will be our final weekend for picking as many of the apple varieties have been picked out. We do have plenty of goldrush apples remaining and early next week will determine if enough crop remains to open for additional days in October.

Picking for this week includes the following apples;

Rome $1.50/lb - a firm crunchy, mildly sweet and mildly tart apple, great for baking or for fresh eating for those whom love a firmer apple

Goldrush $1.50/lb - a very crunchy and very sweet apple with a golden hue. This apple is also mildly tart and is a great keeper storing 8+ months in cold storage. It is great for baking, fresh eating, or cider

Donuts and slushies will also be available and as always there is no fee to come and pick and no appointments are necessary.
