My Grandfather was my best friend. He's been gone now almost 52 years. Things were so very different back then, weren't they? Saturday mornings, he would pick me up in his dark green Buick Convertible on the greatest adventures. Truth be told, I didn't give a care a bit where we went. It only mattered I was with him. Sometimes we'd stop at Mr. Rabin's Shoe Store. I think my Grandfather filled his furnace with oil as he did for so many businesses & homes along the North Shore. Before we'd leave, Mr. Rabin would say, "now I wonder which pair of shoes Meg thinks are prettiest"? He'd measure my foot & go behind a curtain in back & re-emerg with a pretty box in a pretty shopping bag that smelled leathery like his store & I felt like the luckiest girl in the world!!! My Grandpa would always scold Mr. Rabin for spoiling me, but he would have done it anyway. Onto the German Butcher wed go for rolls of Braunschweiger, Headcheese & thick bacon ๐Ÿฅ“ the smokey scent of which makes me drool instantly to this day ๐Ÿคช And as we'd turn to leave, Butcher Schneider always said, "isn't Meg forgetting something" as he'd jingle a cellophane bag tied with ribbon, filled with sour Rubber Bears over the counter (Gummy Bears these days)!!! Then off further into the country to see the Asparagus Farmer who's wife always had baskets & buckets of berries. A good restaurant or caterer doesnt waste a single crumb. In the walkin hangs a bucket filled with mushroom stumps, parsley stems & carrot scraps waiting for their 2nd encore in the stock pot. A chef at home stores the same contents in a frozen Ziploc for the very same purpose. And after all the holiday festivities begin to wind down, Im always left with a dozen or more little containers cluttering my fridge. Scrumptious dollops here, there & everywhere which in 2 weeks will be indicernible discards. Take the 4 cups of utterly fabulous wild rice, mushroom & butternut squash. Toss it all in the Vitamix with 4 cups chicken stock, 1 cup leftover wine or champagne & 2 cups cream for 3 quarts of the finest Cream of Mushroom Soup youve EVER had. Freezes or gifts GREAT The 8 leftover mushroom caps & 3 TBS creamed spinach hanging out in the veg drawer? Stuff the caps with the spinach plus any crumbs of bacon/craisins/waterchestnuts lying around & top with the last pieces from your cheese board, few cubes of feta or bits of parm left on the rind. Bake @ 425 for 20-25 minutes. Divinely crispy leftover breadcrumbs or cayenne/brown sugar walnuts staring down at you from the top of the fridge? Blanch & shock asparagus or other veg. Quick saute in left over chicken fat for an umami blast & finish with the crumbs or spiced nuts. Any leftover chicken or bacon fat? Perfect for sealing discoloration from Avacados! And the last slice of gingerbread, coffee cake of figgy pudding... crumble, toast on a cookie sheet & sprinkle over ice cream with caramel sauce. You know... I leave my tree up as long as I can. I play Christmas music until Superbowl & squeeze everlast drop of the magical season from every candle & twinkle light... I guess using every delightful crumb left over is just another way of letting Christmas live in my heart a few hours longer ๐ŸŽ„โ„๏ธ๐ŸŽ„โ„๏ธ๐ŸŽ„โ„๏ธ๐ŸŽ

Most CERTAINLY it IS incumbent upon the Gift~Giver to taste the wares before presenting the Gift ๐ŸŠ๐Ÿ‹๐Ÿฅ–๐Ÿธ๐ŸŽ I think what I look forward to most on a Chef's Day Off is cooking for others with no time table, no race to the finish. I envision their happiness while unwrapping a parcel that smells divine through the wrapper. I picture their rapture when consuming the finished product such as these... Caramelinzed purple onions, sweet ripe tomatoes which have burst & turned to jam while baking with fragrant herbs in Pastry... smokey knots of thick slab bacon & ooozy sharp cheese bubbling in batter in Popover Pans... and these mouth watering Syrups of Orange & Thai Curry Leaves ๐Ÿƒ, Meyer Lemon & Toasted Cardamom, Kefer Lime Leaves & Cranberry Relish all for special people in my life who have touched my heart all year & ... Throwback to the GREATEST WEDDING of 2019 ๐ŸŽ„๐Ÿพโ„๏ธ๐Ÿฅ‚โ˜ƒ๏ธ What's a Wedding without someone's dress that doesn't arrive until 46 minutes before Showtime, a power-outage/teardown/reset minutes before the 1st guest arrives to the Rehearsal Dinner, cars that don't start, a Wedding Cake miracle reminiscent of Andy Dalton's Hail Mary Pass to AJ Green circa 2016, and... ... "what do you mean where's the RING"??? Conjuring the scrumptious scents, hues & tastes of Autumn today... Exquisitely ripened, sun-drenched October tomatoes ๐Ÿ…๐Ÿ…๐Ÿ… melting into roast garlic, extra sweet blistered Meyer Lemon ๐Ÿ‹๐Ÿ‹๐Ÿ‹ & crispy/charred Bermuda Onion. Frappe'd with just a hint of cream & Tawny Port till velvety-smooth. I made 6 quarts as ๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽ's and 6 for the freezer (can double as an elegant, hand-rolled Pasta or Gnocchi Sauce). And what would Tomato Soup be without its partner in crime??? Slightly sweet, thick sliced Brioche slathered with European Butter (you can NEVER have too much butter) crackling as it toasts under a mountain of Gruyere, bitey fresh Arugula & juicy Fall Pears๐Ÿ๐Ÿ๐Ÿwith a couple good cranks of the pink & black peppercorn mill ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ‚๐ŸŽƒ๐Ÿท๐Ÿง€๐Ÿž๐Ÿฅฌ๐ŸŒถ๐Ÿง… Perfect during the Game, after the pumpkin patch, weeknight supper or with those very hungry Grandkids on Emmy's Day Off ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿณ๐Ÿ‘ผ๐Ÿ‘ผ๐Ÿ‘ผ

Opening night for Garden Dinners under the Stars โญ๐ŸŒœโญ๐ŸŒœโญ๐ŸŒœโญ๐ŸŒœโญ When I was a little girl, my parents, aunts & uncles, grandparents & all their friends would cluster on the terrace, Dirty Martini's in one hand (or Manhattans as the case might be), Pall Mall Menthol Cigarette in the other. Except for Mr. Metzger who always held a fat cigar. We, the kids were left in the garage with old pickle jars, hammers & screwdrivers to craft our own air holes in the lids to capture Fire Flies ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒš๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒ” in Miss Smith's Field. Dinner was served when the old, black, cast iron bell rang out. Tonight... slightly different but charming & memorable... just the same. Aperol, Koval Gin & Q-Tonic Cocktails with Grilled Goat Cheese & Calimyrna Figs wrapped in Proscuitto starters. Ceviche of Sea Bass & Scallops with Cilantro & fresh toasted White Corn Chips light as air. Carpaccio Salad with Gabrielle Olive Oil from Napa and 12 year Villa Manodori Balsamic of Modena & shaved 36 month Stravecchio. Matched with Chateau Puech-Haut Saint Dresery Tete De Belier Rose, followed by Berry Cobbler & Flaming Grand Manier Coffees with ๐ŸŠ Nutmeg Whipped Creme. Ooooo La La ๐Ÿ’๐Ÿพ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿฅ‚

Flopsy, Mopsy & Peter Cottontail cleaned me out of EVERY Carrot, Green Bean, Leaf of Bibb, Oak Leaf, Endive, Beet & Parsnip ๐Ÿฅฌ๐Ÿฅ•๐ŸŒฑ๐ŸŒพ Let me TELL YOU SOMETHING โฃโฃโฃ I have YET MORE RESPECT for every Farmer on the planet โญโญโญโญโญ The real Heroes ๐Ÿšœ๐Ÿชš๐Ÿช’๐Ÿชง๐Ÿ”จ 18 hours to install this Rabbit Proof Fortress. Bending each & every wire... utterly grueling, back-breaking WORK. AND I can't IMAGINE what adding barbedwire might doโฃโฃโฃWhen the kid at the hardware store sold me the box of 1200 industrial staples for my power gun, he added his 2 cents, "NOBODY could use more than 1200 staples for a 2x20 fence". Clearly, he had NO IDEA who he was dealing with ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ˜ ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿคจ But after googling "how to keep rabbits from destroying your garden" & reading of vicious trappings, electrocution & poison pellets in their burrows... this is my harmonious answer ๐Ÿฆซ๐Ÿ‡๐Ÿฟ๐ŸŒณ Sustanance Sunday Supper... screaming hot Au Gratin Dishes from 500 degree oven, butter, garlic, red ๐ŸŒถ flake, Jumbo Prawns ๐Ÿฆ๐Ÿค, ๐Ÿ‹ & toasty Panko Crumbs for 15 minutes. NOTHING better than the precocious tartness & dark ruby hued Cranberry Whiskey Sour ๐Ÿคชโฃโฃโฃ My friend Pio (once GREAT Restauranteur of Puerto Vallarta, gone too soon) taught me the true art of the Drink. Much like food it MUST be textured. Playful foam of egg white, feathery skewers of rich, colorful herbs ๐Ÿƒ๐ŸŒฑ, the vexing scent of toasted citrus ๐Ÿ‹๐ŸŠ๐Ÿˆ... in a tall, sleek vessel, short intricately scored crystal tumbler or briskly shaken in a fat jam jar... it relays one's affection to another like a carefully made guest room with white goose pillows, fine linen & fresh flowers ๐Ÿ’. Many New Year's Eves, my Mother-in-law & I would take every pride to craft the PERFECT, massive, crystal Punch Bowl of frothy, luxurious Tom & Jerry's.
