The Ligonier Country Market has been in business for 50 years. For the past 24 years, we have rented land from the Loyalhanna Watershed. Throughout the past year, the relationship with the Loyalhanna Watershed has changed due to their alleged plans to hold another event on their grounds.
In the past, under the direction of the former Ligonier Country Market Director, the market was out of compliance with the township. However, after a change in leadership going into 2024, the Ligonier Country Market came into compliance with the township and has been granted event permits for the 2024, 2025 and this upcoming 2026 season from Ligonier Township, as well as an appreciation in change of leadership from the Watershed.
There has been a disturbance with the Loyalhanna Watershed in renegotiation of the lease, which does not terminate until December 2027. The Loyalhanna Watershed wants to gain control of the Ligonier Country Market by downsizing the market to 75 vendors, adopting a rain cancellation policy, cancellation of the Holiday Market, and having input on what vendors are at the market. This not only hurts the Ligonier Country Market, but our family of vendors and the town itself.
The Presidents of both the Ligonier Country Market and the Loyalhanna Watershed met back in June of 2025. The Ligonier Country Market Board of Directors invited the Loyalhanna Watershed Board of Directors to a meet and great on August 6, 2025, but the Watershed denied the invitation. The market made another attempt by inviting the Watershed board to a Market on September 20th and 27th. Only one board member came on the 20th and none came on the 27th. The member of the Watershed was very impressed with the market during her visit and walk around with Director of the Market, Kelly Svesnik. Directors from both organizations met again on October 8th at the field for the end of season wrap up where Susan Huba, told Kelly Svesnik there were no issues and they reviewed the grass area that the market needed to reseed after the Holiday Market. The last meeting was on October 29th where the Director and Vice President of the Market and the Director of the Watershed, President and two members from the Watershed sub committee was in attendance when the new demands were presented. The Watershed at that time gave that date to meet or not again until December.
The market also pays for the up keep of the grounds, water and electricity.
The Ligonier Country Market brings in 63,000 visitors throughout the Saturday market season, which brings a great impact into our towns economics.
After approval of the Ligonier Country Market event permit at the January 5, 2026 meeting, The Loyalhanna Watershed contacted the Township stating we do not have a lease with them. On January 23rd, two hours after the Market attorney informed the Watershed that we could not downsize in half to 75 vendors and cancel when it rains, the Loyalhanna Watershed sent an eviction notice to the Ligonier Country Market giving the market 30 days to vacate the premises.
