Saffron & the Important Side Effects of Diabetes.
The problem with diabetes is that it doesn’t stop with diabetes. It can lead to important complications like cardiovascular, kidney and liver disease. This meta-analysis set out to see if saffron can help.
This meta-analysis included 13 controlled studies of 840 people with pre-diabetes or diabetes. It used many different forms of saffron.
The results showed no benefit for kidney function, but the news was good from then on.
When it came to the diabetes itself, saffron significantly reduced fasting blood glucose levels compared to placebo.
When it came to liver function, there was no effect on ALT but a significant reduction of AST compared to placebo. Interestingly, another recent meta-analysis of diabetic and nondiabetic people found significant reductions in ALT but not AST.
When it came to cardiovascular disease, saffron significantly reduced systolic blood pressure.
This meta-analysis suggests that, in addition to helping diabetes, saffron can help with some of the important complications of diabetes, including liver function and high blood pressure.

Ergothioneine Improves Memory & Sleep in Older Adults
Cognitive decline is common in older people. A still little discussed nutrient found in mushrooms, ergothioneine, might help.
Ergothioneine is a vitamin-like amino acid found most abundantly in mushrooms. Evidence is mounting that, because of its antioxidant, inflammation regulating and detoxifying properties, ergothioneine may powerfully promote longevity. Studies show that ergothioneine levels are lower in elderly people with mild cognitive impairment.
North Americans may not get enough ergothioneine in their diet. When Americans add mushrooms to their diet, rates of premature death go down by 16%: 35% if you also reduce red meat.
You can increase ergothioneine by eating more mushrooms, especially shiitake, maitake, lion’s mane and oyster. You can also increase ergothioneine with supplements.
Several studies have shown that low levels of ergothioneine are associated with mild cognitive impairment, dementia, cerebral vascular disease and Parkinson’s. One study found that low levels of ergothioneine predict quicker cognitive decline. But few studies have looked at the effect of supplementing ergothioneine on cognition.
This new 16-week, double-blind, placebo-controlled study included 127 people between 55 and 79 years old with subjective memory complaints but no mild cognitive impairment or dementia.
It found that 25mg of ergothioneine significantly protected against subjective memory decline compared to placebo. This result is important both in itself and because subjective memory assessment is increasingly being recognized as an important marker of early cognitive decline and later dementia.
The study also found that 25mg of ergothioneine significantly improved ease of falling asleep compared to the placebo group.
This important study provides preliminary promise for ergothioneine as a longevity nutrient that could improve memory.

Peppermint: A Whole New Way to Lower Blood Pressure.
Bet you’ve never thought of this one! Neither had science until now. A first of its kind study finds peppermint oil reduces blood pressure.
High blood pressure is the leading cause of cardiovascular disease and death from cardiovascular disease. It is also one of the most in your control. One way to do it is diet: eating more fruit and vegetables has been definitively shown to lower high blood pressure.
Another way is supplements. Until this new study, there has never been a study of peppermint oil on people with high blood pressure.
The double-blind study included 38 people with either prehypertension or stage 1 hypertension. Half were given a placebo, and half were given 50 mL of peppermint oil diluted in 100 mL of water twice a day for 20 days.
The peppermint oil was significantly more effective than the placebo. It reduced systolic blood pressure by 8.48 mmHg and diastolic blood pressure by 4.57 mmHg. And it did it safely with the same safety results as the placebo.
This first ever study of peppermint oil on people who actually have high blood pressure suggests that this safe and inexpensive natural treatment effectively lowers blood pressure.

Pomegranate Enhances Longevity
In the search to increase longevity, one promising candidate is pomegranate.
Among the root causes of many diseases are inflammation and oxidative stress. A recent meta-analysis has demonstrated that pomegranate significantly reduces both (Inflammopharmacology. 2023 Oct ;31(5):2283-2301).
But a new study introduces a novel way that pomegranate might contribute to longevity.
GF-1 is a hormone that plays a role in longevity. It may even be a biological marker of ageing.
This just published study of 72 adults between 55 and 70 found that taking 740mg of a pomegranate extract standardized for 30% punicalagin polyphenols significantly increased levels of IGF-1 compared to a placebo that had no significant effect.
The study concludes that by elevating IGF-1 levels, pomegranate extract has the “potential to support healthy aging in older adults.”

Want to Protect Your Kids from Respiratory Infections? Try Vitamin C.
Kids are especially susceptible to respiratory infections. Tons of studies have established vitamin C’s ability to protect against respiratory infections in adults. But not much research has been done on vitamin C for kids. Until now.
The common cold, sore throat, sinusitis, pneumonia and bronchitis are all respiratory infections. Because kids have immature immune systems, they are especially susceptible. 14% of all deaths in kids under 5 are due to pneumonia.
This new study suggests that maintaining optimal levels of vitamin C can help.
The large study included 1,344 young people between the ages of 6 and 19. The results showed that higher levels of vitamin C were associated with a lower risk of respiratory infection. Compared to the group with the lowest levels of vitamin C, those with the highest had a significant 50% lower risk of respiratory infection.
The researchers conclude that the results “underscore the significance of maintaining optimal vitamin C levels.” They say the results “suggest that vitamin C supplementation may be potentially used for the prevention and treatment of RIs among children and adolescents.”

What Happens When You Put Two Great Blood Pressure Supplements Together?
Olive leaf extract and potassium have both individually proven their value for blood pressure. So, what happens when you put them together? Lots!
It’s crazy, but 22.6% of Canadian adults have high blood pressure. Crazier still is that nearly half of Americans over the age of 20 do. Worse, only 24% of Americans with high blood pressure have it under control.
This new double-blind study gave either an olive leaf extract-potassium combo or a placebo to 68 adults with mild to moderate high blood pressure. The supplement contained 1000mg of olive leaf extract standardized for at least 160 mg oleuropein and 300mg of potassium. The study lasted 12 weeks.
When blood pressure was monitored at home, diastolic blood pressure showed a trend to greater improvement than the placebo, but it did not reach significance. However, the more important systolic blood pressure dropped significantly more than the placebo. The drop in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure was clinically significant.
But that’s not all the natural supplement did. It significantly and clinically improved blood lipids, including a significant improvement in total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol and triglycerides.
This study supports the use of a combination of olive leaf extract and potassium as a safe, effective natural aid for improving blood pressure and cholesterol, potentially helping to prevent cardiovascular disease.
