Hoffman Heritage and Heirlooms

Hoffman Heritage and Heirlooms Because of the proliferation of monoculture, commercialized, and industrialized farming, the family farm in this country is being lost at an alarming rate.

Our family has been farming the same land since the 1870’s, back when farmers planted a diverse range of vegetables and raised a variety of non-commercial livestock. Our hope is to do our part to preserve our heritage and ensure the viability of the breeds and species that would have been common on early American farms but are now considered rare. We grow only non-hybrid, non-GMO, heirloom vegetab

les. In 2011, we purchased our first registered breeding trio of heritage Mulefoot pigs, a critically endangered species named for its solid, non-cloven hoof similar to that of a mule. Mulefoots are prized for the quality of their meat and, in 2009, won a blind taste test conducted by Slow Food USA and the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy. Over 90 food critics, chefs and food professionals voted Mulefoot pork #1 in taste compared against all other heritage breeds and commercial breeds. We also raise heritage Australorp chickens, a recovering breed prized for their egg-laying ability. In the 1920’s a pen of six “Australorp” hens set a world record by laying 1857 eggs in 365 days – an average of 309.5 eggs each! We will be selling our products at several markets in the Lincolnton, NC, area. We hope to see you there!

Who’s been enjoying all this sunshine?

If you’ve lived in North Carolina long enough, you know our weather has a mind of its own. One day, it’s 70 and sunny; the next, we’re waking up to frost. And let’s not forget those surprise storms that roll in out of nowhere.

For farmers, this unpredictability isn’t just an inconvenience—it’s a real challenge. Too much rain? Crops drown. Too little? Drought stress. Sudden freezes can wipe out tender plants overnight, and heat waves in winter can trick crops into blooming too early.

Growing food in NC takes patience, resilience, and a whole lot of weather watching. It’s a constant battle with Mother Nature, but it makes us appreciate every successful harvest that much more.

Next time you pick up fresh local produce, just remember—it didn’t grow without a fight!

Come out tomorrow and see us and all our fellow farmers
