🌳These Hard-to-Get, Highly Desirable Trees Are In!

🍐Juicy Jewel Pears: What’s desirable about them:
- They are new! The U of MN just introduced them a couple of years ago.
- A beautiful, glossy, bright green, well-shaped tree.
- Fruit early—August 14th
- Hardy for our area.
- Great for eating right off the tree, and will keep for up to three weeks in the refrigerator.
- A cross between an Asian pear (Shinseicki) and a European pear developed by the U of MN (Summercrisp).
- Hard to get - everyone is out, and we have 150 big, beautiful trees that just came in.
- We have 2 perfect pollinator varieties: Shinseicki, and Hosui available to plant with Juicy Jewel to ensure large crops.

🍎Kudos apples: What makes them a great choice:
- The latest apple release from U of MN.
- Cross between Honeycrisp and Zestar (same parents as SweeTango).
- Very crisp, hard, crunchy apple.
- Very sweet (kids love them!)—up to 22% sugar
- Stores well—several weeks, even months.
- Very attractive tree—dwarf trees grow 12 ft tall
- Hard to get—we have 100!

🍒Canadian Romance Cherries: What to like:
- They are super hardy—Zone 2—from Canada.
- They are a cross between Mongolian, dwarf, sweet cherries, and Eastern European tart cherries, resulting in bushes 6 to 12 ft tall.
- Up to 22 % sugar. Make unbelievable pies—no dye needed for rich, red color.
- Don’t need a pollinator.
- Hard to get in the US—we have hundreds!

🍒 FE Cherries (Frances Elizabeth)
- Super hardy, comes from Montana.
- Dwarf 8 ft. high trees, 8 ft. across.
- Sweeter than standard pie cherries.
- Slight yellow tinge in otherwise red fruit.
- So new, their patent is still pending.
- Developed by Frances Elizabeth McCartney.

🌱 Spring Planting Season is Finally Here! 🌱

We at Foothills Orchard are pleased to again offer the best quality fruit trees and bushes available in Minnesota.

In developing our own orchard of 15,000 trees and bushes, we've developed a network of the best fruit trees and bushes, offered at good prices. You may find cheaper trees at the big box stores, but many of those are not hardy for our area or are too small to survive. All of our offerings are zone 4 hardy or better and reflect the latest, best varieties.

This year, we have switched a few varieties, adding Nelson, a hardy blueberry from New Zealand, Haralson, one of Minnesota’s best pie apples, and 2 hardy Asian and European pears. We also carry 3 varieties of Honeycrisp, Triumph (a MN variety with fire blight resistance), and Kudos, a fairly new apple with the same parentage as SweeTango.

We are the perfect nursery to use for starting a home orchard. Many of our trees are 1 inch diameter and over 9 ft. tall. Most of our trees are dwarf or semi-dwarf, meaning you will see fruit as soon as year 2 or 3. We sell nothing we would not grow in our own orchard—indeed, if we don’t sell the 1,000 trees we have coming, we will plant them ourselves.

In retirement, and life in general, some are lucky enough to do what makes them happy. Growing neat and unique plants makes me happy. Because I have a tendency to get carried away, I have lots of plants to share. We will have 2 pickup loads at the FarmersMarket LittleFalls tomorrow morning. Recent nice weather should make for good gardening this weekend. We have some really cool varieties of tomatoes, peppers and herbs for you to choose from
Also 4 varieties of Romance cherries, apple trees and some of my wife's bakery creations and fresh asparagus. Come see us along Hwy 27 in the New2You parking lot from 8 to 12!
