Did this but looks like it didn't post. This is the water, mud and muck I am dealing with. Could not deliver eggs last Friday as we cannot get up our drive to load the crates of eggs as they are too heavy. May not be able to deliver again this week. Yes, we need it, just not so much all at once. I am feeling the whole 40 days/40 nights thing.

Had to cut a couple turkeys in half. I have saws all as a kitchen utensil and use the Fire & Rescue blade. New way to look at tools! Have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Interesting.

Had to subdivide the Cornish house to hold the egg layer chicks and the meat birds. Still working on the power down at the Hen Hotel but this will work for a couple of weeks. More convenient to feed them both at the same time in the mornings. Had to have it divided as the chicks have different feed needs. They are so cute when they are small.

Hope you are having a great weekend. The weather is awesome! Not too hot but I guess there is a lot of hot weather coming. Means the “garage” door on the Inn will be staying open to keep them cool.
The new egg laying chicks have arrived. I haven’t ever gotten this many at one time so they are fun to watch. They are doing great. I have attached a couple of pictures for your enjoyment. They don’t all come out from under the heater plates at one time so it’s hard to get the full impact of how many there are…l37 in total. But we did lose a couple during their trip here but the rest are in great condition. They had a long trip from Ohio. They come by way of USPS as they are the only carrier that guarantees live delivery. These girls will start to lay in about 5 months.
We have been working on the smaller solar system for the Hen Hotel, which is where these chicks will go. Had to get a bigger charger/inverter as the other one I got was too small and would not go through the night. It was a 12 volt system and the new one is a 24 volt system. We made it through the night last night with 1 heater plate and a light on. I am putting 2 more heater plates in there to make sure they stay on 24 hours a day before I move the chicks. Chicks need heat 24 hours to stay warm enough. The light that is down there is on the outside of the Hotel to see if the power is still on as it is a ways away from the house. The LED light was so bright I woke up in the middle of the night and thought it was a really bright full moon…..nope, it was the light. Nice to know we will be able to see if the power is on at night. Once the chicks no longer need the heater plates, then we won’t need to use the power down there until winter when the days are shorter.

The hens sure are enjoying the nice weather. I have the big "garage" door on the Chick Inn open so they get lots of new sunshine. I am currently working on a smaller solar system for the Hen Hotel as I have almost 140 new egg laying chicks coming in this week and they need their heater plates to keep them warm. Haven't fixed it to last the whole night yet, so a bit stressful as they should be in about Tuesday-ish. I could put them where the meat chickens were, but I have 50 new meat chickens coming in the next week and need heater plates for them, too. May have to partition off the meat chicken house temporarily and put them all in there as that house is on the house solar system and the Hen Hotel and Chick Inn are too far away from the house system to run wiring down there and the smaller system hasn't made it through the night, yet. Well, good luck to me for this problem.

Big week this week. As you know, I am off-grid. I have 135+ egg laying chicks coming in in a couple of weeks. I am putting them in the coop/run that was for the turkeys. But I need power down there for the heater plates for the chicks to keep warm. So, got a smaller solar system to power them as the coop is too far away from the main house's power. So, this week we need to get that small solar power system up and running so I can make sure that the system will power the heater plates 24 hours a day.....especially overnight on the batteries. Dry runs before hand will help reduce the stress. Keep you posted.

I know it's been a long time since I posted. The days just get away from me taking care of all the hens. They are up to producing over 160 dozen eggs a week. That's a lot of egg washing on Thursday and lots of deliveries of farm fresh eggs. I do not hold any over to the next week so I always have fresh eggs. If I don't deliver all of them, I donate them to Shepherd's Gate. Everyone gets good eggs.

I know you are probably aware of the avian flu that is tracking this way. We had it here in California a couple years ago. Millions of egg layers, meat chickens and commercial turkeys have been destroyed. That is why you will see egg prices go up and supply go down. My hens are fully protected. There is not cure or vaccination. You have to make sure your hens are protected from wild birds. My hens are totally covered and fenced so they never come in contact with wild birds migrating. With over 300 hens, I don't want to lose any of them. I also have another 139+ egg laying chicks coming in in May. Too many? Nah! This is chicken math and you can never have too many. Of course that's not counting the meat chickens that I have coming in at 50 at a time. They will also be in in May.

Lots of work but I enjoy the hens. They all have personalities and some are very funny. Treated them with lots of spring mix lettuces this morning and they went totally crazy over it. Simple entertainment....what can I say.
